Good afternoon. Today I have put together - in one article - several ways to make Christmas wreaths with your own hands. I will show you how you can make the base of a Christmas wreath - not necessarily from willow twigs or spruce legs (not all city residents have this material) - so here you will see alternative bases for New Year's wreaths - from newspaper, fabric, toilet paper rolls and other suitable material.

How to make a BASE RING

for a Christmas wreath.

Let's approach our question in order. First, let's figure out what the BASICS are for New Year's Eve. What are the ways to MAKE such a base ring with your own hands? And then we’ll start decorating the finished bases.

Here are the basics for Christmas wreaths we will look at.

1. Paper flat base for a wreath (+ ways to decorate wreaths on this basis)
2. Volumetric base for a wreath from newspaper or toilet paper
3. Wicker ring for wreath(made of straw or willow twigs)
4. New Year's wreaths with foam ring base.
5. And then I will show you how to make decorations for wreaths with your own hands.

OPTION #1

from FLAT CARDBOARD

WHERE TO GET. Take a large piece of cardboard (a large pizza box would be ideal). Or you can take large gray packaging boxes (lying freely available near the back entrance of any grocery store). You can ask at the store (they will gladly give you for a chocolate bar). You can ask the caretaker at your work - he has a basement full of so much stuff.

WHAT TO DO. Place a large dish on a sheet of cardboard. We trace with a pencil. Place a small saucer on the center of the drawn circle. We check with a ruler that the edge of the saucer is at the same distance from the large circle to the west, north, east, south. We also outline with a pencil.

We cut out our flat donut from cardboard with scissors. We take white toilet paper and wrap our future Christmas wreath. Or a lace ribbon (this will cost more money). And then we decorate the Christmas wreath... this will be discussed below in our article.

Advent wreath with a flat base.

DECOR of a New Year's wreath - WITH THREAD AND FELT.

We wrap the cardboard base with threads. We twist roses from felt and sew them onto a thread winding. We cut out the shape of a Christmas tree from salt dough and sculpt houses (we press windows into them). In some places we sew Christmas balls in the same color as the overall palette.

The DECOR of the New Year's wreath is from an old SWEATER.

If you have a sweater lying among your old things for a long time. Then you can cut off two sleeves from it and decorate the flat base of the wreath with them. For this purpose, each cut sleeve rip along the longitudinal seam– open – wrap the base ring around the circle and again sew the same seam.

We do the same with the second sleeve - and we direct the end of the second sleeve to the top of the first sleeve - so that this the cut off top was hidden inside the neat elastic band of the counter sleeve. Next, such a flat knitted base can be decorated with snowflakes, ribbons, and even skates (or any Christmas tree decorations).

For example, you can paste over this cardboard circle with corners made from pieces of fabric (or paper). Cut the fabric into triangles - fold each triangle in half twice. And glue it onto a cardboard circle. First, we place triangles on the outer edge of the circle, then on top, closer to the middle, then another row closer to the middle, and the last row along the inner circle of the cardboard blank for the Christmas wreath.

You can also cover such a flat donut for a Christmas wreath with pieces cut out of paper. Paper bags, paper stars.

You don't have to cut a hole in the cardboard ring. And make a wreath out of gift paper and Christmas balls. We see in the photo below that the gift paper is cut into rectangles. Each is rolled into a tube and glued to a paper circle - radially, with a small distance between the tubes.

We fill this distance with smaller tubes. And fill the middle with balls. We string the balls on a wire - we get a bunch of large and small Christmas balls. We make 2 holes in the center of the cardboard. We insert the ends of the wire into the holes, and twist them on the wrong side, forming a loop by which this vein can be hung.

You can cut pieces of music paper, roll them into tubes and cover them with a foam ring. You will get such an elegant wreath.

DECOR of the New Year's wreath is made of pine cones.

The same flat cardboard donut for a Christmas wreath can be painted. And immediately start covering it with the prepared material - spruce paws, fir branches, paper tinsel, Christmas tree garland or forest cones (as in the photo below). We attach the cones to polyurethane foam or hot glue from a glue gun.

WHERE TO GET. This option is suitable for summer residents or village residents. We need branches (remaining after pruning an apple tree, for example). A city dweller can also stock up on three or four thick branches (trees are also pruned in the city).

WHAT TO DO. We chop the branches with an ax or saw them with a jigsaw. Cut out a ring from cardboard (from an old box). And now we will place pieces of our stumps in a chaotic order on this ring. We coat each piece with glue before laying.

WHAT GLUE IS SUITABLE?- shoe glue in tubes, or hot glue from a glue gun ($3 at a hardware store) Or a can of polyurethane foam also glues well.

We overlap and glue the pieces into several layers. Let's dry it. And cover it with white paint WHAT PAINT IS SUITABLE- you can buy acrylic paint at a hardware store ($1.5 per liter). You can buy paint in a spray can (this is much more expensive). You can dilute white gouache with PVA glue and paint with a wide brush or a foam sponge for washing dishes (very convenient). And then such a white wreath can be decorated with bright accessories.

You can place nuts, cones, pieces of moss, twigs, sticks - any natural material - on a cardboard circle.

In the same way, Christmas balls of various diameters can be placed on a flat cardboard circle. We attach it with glue from a glue gun. You can add strings of bugles and Christmas tree beads to the balls.

OPTION #2

FROM WIRE.

And since we’ve come to wreaths made of Christmas balls, this type of material ( Christmas decorations) can be mounted on another base for wreaths - on a wire ring.

In the photo below we see how we twist a ring from ordinary wire. And then we hang bundles of Christmas balls on it. By the same principle as onion bulbs are hung in a braid, when they are linked together into a garland and hung from the ceiling in the kitchen.

A variety of decorative materials can be attached to such a wire ring.

For example (photo below), we can take ordinary foam balls, pin them on pieces of wire, wind each wire tail to a common wreath ring and cover everything together with silver spray paint.

You can do it even simpler - make a fluffy New Year's wreath - tie many, many strips cut from paper napkins (or white airy fabric) around a wire frame. Like the Christmas wreath from the photo below.

OPTION #3

FROM THE NEWSPAPER

You can make flagella-twigs from sheets of newspaper. And roll a wreath from such newspaper branches - just like from twigs. We also make flower decorations from newspaper.

We roll the sheets of newspaper into a tube. We take a new sheet and place our tube on the edge of this new sheet and wrap it in this sheet. It turns out that the tube is almost 2 times longer. We place it on the edge of a new sheet and also wrap it in a roll (we get a tube 3 times longer). We continue until we have a tube long enough to bend into a large ring for an Advent wreath. We wrap the tube with rope and roll it into rings - we add new layers of newspaper to the thickness and wrap it with rope again. At the end, you can wrap everything with white toilet paper or tape or a bandage.

You can also do wreath decor MADE OF FABRIC. For example, cut fabric into squares. Fold each one in half and sew the side and bottom seams - we get a mini-bag. We put cotton wool (or padding polyester) in it and sew up the top seam. We tie the middle of the bag with a ribbon - and we have a plump bow. We tie these bows to the wreath ring.

Plump sweets are made from the same squares of fabric - here you don’t even need to make seams. Place the padding polyester, wrap it and wrap the ends of the “candy” with thread.

This newspaper base for a wreath is quite heavy (paper weighs a lot). Therefore, you can make a lightweight (hollow inside) model of the Christmas ring-base. Like the next idea...

OPTION #4

FROM ROLLS.

If we want to get a NOT HEAVY light base for a wreath, then to do this we string toilet paper rolls onto a rope (or wire). We place them on the table, level them so that they lie in the shape of a regular circle - we fix the rolls with pieces of tape, that is, we glue them to each other so that they do not move or spin on the rope and do not change their circular shape.

Then we make a newspaper wrap, or a medical bandage, or toilet paper, or tape, or masking tape.

Decor options for a Christmas wreath made from a LIGHT BASE. Such a wreath, which is hollow inside, can be attached to light jewelry made from felt or crocheted, small branches are thin and light, so that their weight does not distort the wreath or cause the empty rolls inside to crumple.

You can tie pieces of tulle on it. We buy tulle in different colors at a fabric store. We cut it into equal rectangles, long enough to wrap the ring around the wall, tie it in a knot, and leave the ends sticking out.

Paper decorations are also suitable. Fans made of colored gift paper (or elegant table napkins). We make a fan from a strip of paper and unfold it into a ring.

OPTION #5

FROM FOAM.

WHERE TO GET. Foam rings for crafts are sold at craft stores. Enter “foam ring + name of your city” in the search bar of your laptop and you will find a store that sells similar things. Or you can order with delivery from China (for example, on the AliExpress website).

This ring is already ready for use. And you can come up with any winding for it. For example, coniferous or fir legs (as in the photo of the Christmas wreath below). We simply take branches of a live Christmas tree, or branches of an artificial Christmas tree, and tie them to the wreath. So if you want to throw away your old artificial Christmas tree, take your time - cut off the good, bald branches from it - they will be suitable for wrapping a wreath.

Can you do it on a Christmas wreath? simple FLOWERS FROM FABRIC.

It is very easy. The photo below shows how to quickly make this New Year's wreath with your own hands.

We buy a wide ribbon, cut it into pieces diagonally (see photo) - we get RHOMBES. We compress each rhombus in the middle(from obtuse angle sides) – rewind the compressed middle with a thread. It turns out 2 petals from one rhombus at once.

We repeat the same thing with two more diamonds- and we get three pairs of petals. We put them next to each other so that the wrapped centers of the three rhombuses meet together (in the center of the flower) - we fix them with a thread winding so that all three middles stuck close to each other. We thread a needle into the end of the thread and sew several beads to the center of the flower to hide the rough part of the flower winding.

Using pins, we attach the flowers to the body of the foam wreath ring.

You can also use a foam ring cover with NATURAL MATERIAL . These may be inshell peanuts. They are inexpensive, we glue them with a glue gun to a foam ring (a glue gun is sold in any construction department of the store, it costs 3-4 dollars). And after the peanuts stick, we cover everything with gold spray paint.

You can also make a foam Christmas wreath from PINE SCALES. To do this, we collect more fir cones, take pliers and tear out the scales from them. And then we smear a section of the foam wreath with a glue gun and lay the scales on it (like tiles) ... then we smear a new section and lay the next portion of scales. Painstakingly, slowly - but simply.

If you have some leftover plum jam after making bag of bones. Then he, too, can take part in creating a Christmas wreath.

You can go to the woodshed and gather some PIECES OF BARK. Break them into pieces of the same size and also paste them over the ring for the New Year's wreath (as was done in the photo below).

You can also use this foam ring for a wreath tie with SPOKES or CROCHET. And knit a lot of Christmas applique decorations for the wreath (as in the photo below).

OPTION #6

FROM STRAW.

Let's take it a bunch of straw - wrap it with thick thread (or thin wire). At the end of the beam we apply new bun– and we also do the winding with threads. Again, we take another bunch, apply it to the tail of the previous one (we bury it in the middle of the tail) and wind it with threads - as we work, we gradually set our straw tail in a circular direction.

We do repetitions until our curling straw tail closes into a ring. We cover the closure area with straw and also rewind it tightly with thread. Again we move the spool of thread around the entire donut, and as we move, we place plump straws in the thin places of the wreath.

And then along the way you can add a green branch of a bush or spruce paws, I also fix them with the same twine.

OPTION #7

FROM BRANCHES.

And now the most labor-intensive basis for the New Year's wreath. From twigs. There are also several auxiliary techniques for creating such a basis from branches. And I have collected all the ways and techniques by which a Christmas wreath is created from twigs and branches. Let's look at them in order.

Method of weaving a wreath No. 1– FROM FRESH BRANCHES.

The most important thing in a twig wreath is to ensure that it is a perfect circle. That is, it flattened into an oval. And it is also necessary that its thickness be uniform throughout the entire circumference of the ring - so that there is symmetry and harmony.

Therefore, to create a wreath of the correct shape, you need a CIRCLE SAMPLE. You need to find some kind of guide round piece that will serve as a template for the round wreath.

In the photo below we see how a cut round laundry basket served as a convenient form for quickly creating a wreath. The bottom of the basket itself holds the twigs in the shape of a regular circle, and all you need to do is calmly and confidently place new twigs in the right places.

When the entire arrangement of branches along the wreath is evenly distributed, we tie it with threads in several places, or wrap the entire wreath with thread in a spiral. And our craft can be taken out of the basket.

The same can be done with the top cut part of the basket. Also used as a form-building limiter for wreath rods.

In this case, it also helps that all the branches have just been cut from the bush - so they are fresh and flexible. That is, they easily repeat the shape of a circle without breaking.

But what should we do if we only have dry branches that have become stale in their shape? To do this, the following method of laying branches will help us.

Method of weaving a wreath No. 2 - FROM DRY BRANCHES.

If we want to arrange dry, inflexible branches in a circle, then this is also possible. To do this, we again need a CIRCLE TEMPLATE - for the laying stencil. It can be cut out of cardboard, or drawn with chalk on the floor (circle a round basin with chalk, and put a round dish in the middle of the drawn circle, and also circle it with chalk). The circle template is ready.

Now we place all the dry twisted twigs in a chaotic mosaic within the boundaries of this sample circle. We arrange until we begin to like the outline of our future New Year's wreath.

And then we tie up the key points with threads, carefully inserting the thread between the branches, trying not to move them too much from their intended places. You can lay out pieces of thread on the circle template in advance, and then (after laying the branches) just lift the ends of the threads and tie them into knots. After this, you need to carefully lift the wreath and once again wrap the threads in a spiral - along the entire wreath.

Method of weaving a wreath No. 3 – FROM SHORT BRANCHES.

And if you only have short stick branches and twigs at your disposal, then you can make a wreath out of them too. This will work if you fix short sticks on a wire frame. Two pieces of wire (shorter and longer) and 4 sticks will help you make a frame.

We roll two pieces of wire into a ring - we get a larger and smaller ring.

We place the smaller one in the center of the larger one and tie the sticks on four sides (perpendicular to the center).

And now we tie sticks around the entire circumference of the rings, new sticks to these sticks, and so on until we get a nice branched wreath-base. All that remains is to decorate it and make it elegant for the New Year.

Method of weaving a wreath No. 4 – FROM WILLOW WANDS

Willow twigs are needed before work keep in water otherwise they will dry out and will not bend. They cut the rods, came home, and put them in a bucket of water with the cuts down, and twisted the ends into a bucket, bent them, and soaked them. Wet rods fold perfectly (like rubber bands). And then they dry in the wreath - and the wreath becomes stale.

After drying, it can be PAINTED - with white gouache using a foam sponge. And paint over the unpainted cracks of the wreath with a brush (it gets into inaccessible places on the wreath). To prevent the gouache from staining your hands with white, spray the wreath on top with hairspray - this fixes the paint and adds shine.

If you take BIRCH BRANCHES, then you need to soak them in very bitter water. Using the same principle as a birch broom is steamed in a bathhouse. The twigs will become hot and flexible - and you will quickly twist them into a wreath base. Then dry and paint.

DECOR OPTIONS

DECOR OPTION No. 1 – dough figures.

DECOR OPTION No. 3 – cobweb stars.

Look at the photo below. You see on the wreath there are two stars cut from a web of thread. like this It's easy to make a web yourself.

Take a plastic file. Pour a puddle of PVA glue onto it (you can also use silicate transparent glue). Take a spool of thread of the color you want the future spider web to look like. And we begin to unwind the spool and place the threads in the puddle of glue - in a chaotic manner. We try to arrange the threads so that there are no large holes in our homemade web. We leave it all to dry for a day (or overnight).

The next day, we easily separate our dried cobwebs from the file. On top of it we place a star stencil cut out of paper - and with scissors we cut the web, repeating the contours of the star. We get beautiful decoration for a New Year's wreath.

Using the same principle, you can cut cobweb flowers for New Year's wreaths of delicate design.

DECOR OPTION No. 4 – knitted snowflakes.

Everything is clear here. For those who crochet. Let's take it. We knit. Starch the snowflake (so that it is hard and keeps its shape). We dry the starched snowflake in a straightened form - on thick cardboard, secured with pins at the spread.

We tie our hard starch snowflake to the wreath.

In addition to snowflakes, you can knit and starch bells. Dry them by placing them on yogurt jars.

DECOR OPTION No. 5 – felt crafts.

We buy felt. That is, wool that has not yet been made into yarn (thread). Pour warm soapy water into a bowl. We take a piece of such wool, immerse it in a warm soapy solution and roll the ball with our hands for 5-7 minutes until it becomes round and hard. Let's dry it. We make several of these wool balls. And we get the decoration that we see in the photo of the Christmas wreath below.

We use the same wool-soap principle to make a rose. From pieces of wool we mold flat petals of different sizes in soapy water. We twist and sew them into a rose.

DECOR OPTION No. 6 – Balls and stars.

Here, too, everything is simple and clear. We thread wires into the ears of the balls and screw them to the selected wreath twig.

SHINY STARS. Cut out stars from cardboard. Also make the inside of the stars into openwork holes. Coat the stars with glue and dip them in glitter sprinkles . Sprinkles can be bought at a craft store. Or use half the nail polish. Or DO IT YOURSELF. To do this, we buy a shiny fluffy Christmas tree garland and trim it very finely (we get a whole bunch of small shiny cuts) - cheap and effective.

DECOR OPTION No. 7 – shiny flowers.

Here on the Christmas wreath (with the photo below) we see golden flowers. Of course they can be found on sale. Or you can avoid spending money and do it yourself. Now I’ll tell you how...

We take cotton pads. Cut from 5 cotton pads large petals. And 5 more small petals. Now pour PVA glue into a saucer - dip each cotton petal in the glue, squeeze out the excess glue - put the petals on a plastic file to form two five-petal flowers - large and small (we bend the petals in a raised state - let them dry like that). We dry them overnight. In the morning we take our 2 dried flowers and connect them - we glue the small flower into the middle of the large one. Next, use a brush to cover them with a thin layer of PVA glue and sprinkle them with gold sprinkles. We get these luxurious flowers to decorate a Christmas wreath. We made this beauty with our own hands from cheap discs and sprinkles cut from a Christmas tree garland. Fast, simple and cheap.

DECOR OPTION No. 8 – natural material.

Below we see a photo of a Christmas wreath which is used to decorate birch bark (we wrap it around the wreath like a ribbon), the stars are cut out with scissors from the same bark.

Flowers roses made from corn husks— roll the corn cake into a roll, cut the parts of the roll with scissors, and form the petals with your hands.

Dried fruits (dried fruits are also good for compote). And sprigs of rowan or hawthorn. To prepare their bright fruits for the Christmas wreath It's better not to dry(they will wrinkle and lose their appearance) and mummify in paraffin or wax. To do this, we melt a candle cut into pieces in a saucepan (made of wax or paraffin - buy in the hardware department of the store) - and dip rowan or hawthorn fruits suspended by a thread into the hot wax. We dry it on the same thread (we put a tree branch in a vase and hang our bunches of fruits on it.

First way

The simplest and most expensive is to buy a ready-made base for a wreath in a store. Ready-made bases are made of polystyrene foam, vines, rattan, straw, and iron rods. You yourself choose the material that best suits your composition.

Second way

The second method was proposed by Igor Linnik. First, you need to cut out a stencil for the base of the future wreath from cardboard. By the way, it doesn’t have to be a ring; it can be any shape – a circle, a star, a heart.
Next, using some thick paper (wrapping paper, newspaper), you need to create volume for the future wreath. The paper must be compressed tightly and connected with a cardboard stencil using a rope or wire, carefully leveling it.
The result is a wonderful base for a wreath.

Third way

The base for a wreath is easy to make from paper, even without a stencil. Simply forming with your hands the shape you have in mind. We can say that this is a lightweight version of the previous method.

Fourth method

You can make a base for a wreath out of paper in another way. Roll tubes out of newspapers and form them into a ring, gluing the tubes around the perimeter.

Fifth method

If you are planning a small wreath, then the base can be cut from an aluminum baking dish. The shape of the future wreath will depend on the configuration of the baking dish - round, square or rectangular.

Sixth method

What they don't make from plastic bottles! It turns out that you can also make the base of a wreath. It is necessary to cut the bottles, connect them together into a ring, fastening them with glue or tape.

Seventh method

The bases for a foam wreath can be bought in a store, or you can make it yourself. You can take packaging foam, or you can buy a sheet of foam at a hardware store. It is necessary to apply the outline of the wreath onto the foam and cut out the base with a sharp stationery knife.

Eighth method

I think these wreath bases are very cute and practical. I made the base for the heart this way.
To work, you will need pipe insulation. You can take leftovers from repairs or buy them at plumbing stores. This insulation costs pennies. You can buy insulation of different diameters, the choice is very wide.
Everything is done very simply. Cut the insulation to the required length and glue the ends together. There's just one little trick. To ensure that the base for the wreath holds its shape well and does not bend, the insulation must be folded with the seam facing outward. As a result, you will have a perfectly round wreath base.

If the insulation is large in diameter and does not bend very well, then you can glue the ends together using a piece of pipe.

Ninth method

The base for the wreath can be formed from cardboard toilet paper tubes. They just need to be glued together and secured with masking tape.

Tenth method

Some craftsmen use clothes hangers to make wreaths. Two circles are formed from a hanger, which are connected to each other using a bandage or wire.

If you don’t have wire hangers, then use regular plastic ones.

Wreaths are made from anything

In our country, it is customary to make a wreath as a New Year's decoration. However, it has a certain history and symbolism. This decoration came to us from Western countries, where it is a symbol of Christmas. And its real name is “Advent wreath”. Its invention is believed to date back to 1839, and is attributed to the hands of Johann Hinrich Wichern. A Hamburg theologian and Lutheran raised children from a poor family. With the onset of winter, they often asked their mentor if Christmas would come soon (and according to Catholic traditions it is December 25). So that the pupils could count down the days until Christmas, he made a wreath from an old wheel, branches from the garden and satin ribbons, and put 24 small red candles and 4 large white ones in it. Every day the children lit one candle, and on Sunday, along with the small one, they also lit a large white candle. So on December 24, the last candle was burned on Christmas Eve, which indicated the coming of Christmas.

This version is the most famous. However, there is information about ancient Germanic settlements where such wreaths were made before Christmas. The ancient Slavs made similar wreaths from ears of corn and hung them on the door at the entrance. They considered him a talisman and revered him very much. But there is no exact information about what these wreaths looked like and what symbolism they carried. In the old days, the Ukrainian Slavs, for example, used the didukh decoration as a symbol of Christmas. This is a sheaf of straw, which was installed in the corner of the house under the icon. It was considered a talisman, a symbol of wealth, prosperity and preservation of the ancestral family.

In modern traditions, the Christmas wreath has lost its symbolism and is used as a decoration. Often, fir branches, holly, mistletoe and poinsettia are used to make it. You can measure the radius with a ruler and calculate the required wire length using the proposed formula. You can also use another method, and by applying the wire to the sketch of the circle, determine the required length. It’s even easier to form a circle “on the fly” without precise calculations.

In any case, we have decided on the length. Now twist its ends using pliers to form a circle. Depending on what the next layers are made of, wind one or two more layers of wire, fastening them all together. Ready.

The cardboard ring is made without a blank. A circle of the required diameter is drawn on a sheet of cardboard. Next, a certain distance from the outer line is set aside at four points of the circle (so that the inner one turns out even). The inner circle is drawn using the marked points. Now we remove it without disturbing the external one. So we only have the headband left. These are the rings for the New Year's wreath, on which decorative elements are attached.

This way they will be directed in one direction (from the inside to the outside), and we will get a relatively smooth and voluminous wreath. For this option you will need flexible and long branches.
