Unusual beautiful Venetian masks today they have already conquered the whole world: every tourist, having visited Venice at least once, will definitely bring such a souvenir from there, or, when going to a masquerade or ball, you will definitely buy this original product in the store. But why spend a lot of money if you can do it DIY Venetian masks.
We can conditionally divide all Venetian masks into two types: the first, the oldest, came to us from street theaters of the sixteenth century, in which comedy performances were performed and the main characters in it were Columbina, Pulcinella, Harlequin, Piedolino, etc.
The second type is the masks of the Venetian Lady, the Cat, the Joker, the Plague Doctor, and Volto. These masks are precisely the result of centuries-old carnival traditions and rituals.
Previously, the basis for the Venetian mask was various materials - leather, papier-mâché, clay. Today, many people use plastic - in stores you can buy ready-made blanks made of light plastic, which you only need to decorate to your liking with acrylic paints, watercolors or gouache, or oil paints.
We will look at the most affordable and easiest way to create Venetian masks with your own hands at home.
Here we need the following materials:
- modeling paper
- thick paper for rigidity (writing paper, magazine paper, kraft paper, soaked cardboard will also work)
- bandages or cotton fabric
The first stage of making a mask- this is the creation of a model, which we will then cover with papier-mâché. As a model, you can choose a hockey mask or a clay one, which is also easy to make: you need to thickly grease your face with Vaseline and apply a small layer of clay, leaving the areas for the eyes and nose open. The clay hardens for 30 minutes, then is easily removed from the face. Another option is to use bandages to fix the fractures; they are already treated with dry plaster. We buy a couple of packs of bandages at the pharmacy - they are inexpensive, cut the bandages into small pieces and soften them in a container with warm water, then carefully apply them to a face smeared with Vaseline, smoothing out each layer of bandages. The hardening time for this mask is 30 minutes.
Whatever method of creating the mask model you choose, after you have removed it from your face, put soft material, foam rubber or cotton wool inside the mask, so as to completely fill the internal space and leave it overnight in a warm place, but not on the radiator. This is done so that the mask dries completely and does not shrink.
Second phase: remove the internal filler from the mask and lubricate it with Vaseline on the outside, after which we paste over the model using the papier-mâché technique (you can tear regular newspaper or toilet paper into small pieces and fill it with hot water, then, after it swells, squeeze it out, mix with PVA glue and knead thoroughly).
- the first layer is made of plain paper (newspaper or toilet paper)
- the second layer consists of pieces of dry paper, which we glue with glue, carefully pressing these pieces - this is done so that the Venetian mask turns out smooth and rigid
- the third layer consists of even thicker paper glued to a thick layer of glue
- fourth layer - plain paper
- the fifth layer consists of pieces of fabric or bandage that are soaked in glue. This is the most important layer: you must stick pieces of fabric so that there are no folds and wrinkles, so carefully smooth the surface, not forgetting about the relief that should remain on the mask
— the sixth layer consists of plain paper
- and the last layer consists of white fabric, cut into pieces or white paper. After you have glued this layer, use a damp cloth to go through all the joints of the pieces and smooth them out, remove excess glue.
Leave the mask on the model and dry it at room temperature for several days.
Then the most interesting part begins - this Venetian mask decoration. Here you should give free rein to your imagination and decorate the mask with everything you have at hand: apply a design with paints, glue beads, beads, sequins, rhinestones and small stones, thin satin ribbons etc.
That's all, yours DIY Venetian mask is ready and you can go to the masquerade. Such masks are a wonderful gift for friends and acquaintances; they can even be used as an original accent in the interior of an apartment or made into a profitable business.
Many girls love to take aromatic baths with herbs that are ethereal.

Decorating the mask
If you have a ready-made mask, then decorating will not take much time. For this you will need your desire and imagination. The main thing is not to overdo it with details. There are a great many variations of decorations, for example:
Lace mask. Using glue, pieces of white lace, or silver acrylic paint, beads or rhinestones, you can get a very “rich” mask.
Glossy mask with a pattern. Using acrylic paints, paints with a three-D effect, varnish or drying oil, and holographic sparkles, you can create a very bright, cheerful mask.
Classic mask. Using only white paint, we make an “anonymous” mask.
Festive mask. Taking braid, silver and gilding, tiny bells, brocade, silk and feathers, you can make a real large-sized carnival mask.
If you want everyone not only with the beauty of the mask and a flight of fancy, but also with skill, then you should resort to either simple way making a mask - from cardboard, or more complicated - from papier-mâché.
From cardboard:
1. Cut out the shape of a figure eight, while you can add an additional detail to one of the sides, imitating a feather, without cutting it off.
2. Make holes for the eyes
3. Attach a stretchable thread or a special stick - holder
4. Decorate with foil gift paper. Add more bright details. You can also attach a piece of sheer fabric to create a veil.
From papier-mâché:
1. Tear up as much paper as possible
2. Prepare glue or paste
3. Inflate the balloon and glue it on, moistening it generously with glue.
4. When the mold dries, the ball can be pierced and the mold cut in half
5. Add a few more layers to the dried semicircular shape for strength.
6. Make a small ball - the nose and glue it again. It is at this stage that all irregularities need to be smoothed out.
7. Do the same for your lips.
8. Let the mold dry again.
9. Make holes for the eyes
10. Paint with white paint

Make holes in the cast for the nostrils, eyes and mouth, trying to make the edges of the hole as smooth as possible. Place a cloth roller into the mask and dry it for 24 hours.

Coat each paper layer with PVA glue. Thus, lay a layer of paper 3-4 mm thick, then dry the model until completely dry at room temperature. Until the papier-mâché has dried, do not remove the mask from the plasticine base - it may become deformed.
Carefully separate the dried papier-mâché from the base and trim the edges with sharp scissors. Process the edges of the eye sockets, nostrils and mouth, giving them an even shape. Cover the mask with acrylic putty, smoothing out surface defects, and then sand the dried surface of the mask with sandpaper.
On the mask, sketch out the contours for painting with a pencil, then cover its surface with a layer of white and pink paint. Add ornaments to the mask with paint of other colors, decorate it with silver and gold patterns, glue sparkles, beads and feathers. The mask is ready.

Real Venetian masks are creations self made, which are made from papier-mâché. At the Venice Carnival, masks were mandatory, and the traditional masks of the Carnival in Venice are divided into two groups: commedia Del Arte masks, which means comedy of masks, and classic masks. It is not surprising that in the 15th century there was a whole profession, the profession of mask maker.
Classic Venetian masks include the Bauta mask (the name of this mask most likely comes from the name of a fictional character that was used to scare children, like the Russian Babai or Buki. This mask always has only two colors - white and black).

To create any Venetian mask quickly and easily with your own hands you will need:
To make this mask, the first thing you need to do is make a base. To do this, you need to lubricate your face with Vaseline, apply a plaster bandage and try not to move until the material is completely fixed. Then you need to outline the contours with a marker and cut off all unnecessary details. To do this, they most often use a knife with teeth or a wood cutter.
To make the surface of the mask smooth, you can cover it with adhesive tape and then apply putty. After drying, you need to paint the product with several layers of glossy white paint and lightly sand all the irregularities.

Plastic is a mass similar to plasticine that hardens after baking. To make a mask based on this material, you first need to cut out a paper template of the future product, roll out the plastic in a thin layer, apply this same template and carefully cut along the contour with a knife. After this, you need to place the workpiece on your face so that it takes the desired shape, cut holes on the sides and put it in the oven.
The time and temperature for baking the plastic is indicated on the packaging. After this, the mask is painted in different colors and decorated with various decorative elements - beads, seed beads, lace, embroidery, sparkles, and feathers.
You can decorate a carnival mask in many ways, one of which is decoupage. To do this, you need to prepare napkins, glue, varnish and paints. This solution is perfect for those who are not very confident in their creative drawing abilities.
Below is a selection of master classes in the video, where each stage of creating a carnival mask is described step by step.
This product has truly enormous power, because it can fundamentally change the person who wears it. Therefore, be very careful when trying on someone else’s image, because this way you can lose your own.
This master class describes step by step how to make a papier-mâché mask with your own hands.
The lesson is designed for beginners, as it does not contain complex decor or professional painting. A frame is used as the final decoration, so the end result is a beautiful panel that is ideal for a gift or home decor. As decoration, you can take ready-made flowers or make them yourself from foamiran, guipure or paper.
In order not to be distracted by small things while working and not to look for what you need, prepare everything you need in advance.
Materials you will need:
To form a mask, you need a plastic face base; such papier-mâché blanks are sold in a craft store.
You will also need:
If you have never done the proposed needlework, before you start making a papier-mâché mask, study. The intricacies of the work and possible difficulties are described in more detail there.
Spread the oilcloth. Tear the printer sheets, newspaper and cotton cloth into pieces and set everything aside separately.
Place the printed paper in a cup of water and let it dry thoroughly.
Spread the base with oil to make the craft easier to separate from the surface.
When making a papier-mâché mask with your own hands, it is important to observe sequence of layers:
Different types of paper are important for even coverage. If it is of the same type, then during the work you may not notice that some places are empty, and in other areas there is a layering. The fabric layer is necessary to give greater strength to the frame.
Start placing the wet white paper pieces onto the prepared base. Try avoid empty spaces so that in the future they do not show through, and the next layers of papier-mâché, which will be bonded with glue, do not stick to the mask.
Add thick PVA glue to a cup of water until it reaches the consistency of thick cream.
Add pieces of newspaper to the cup with the diluted glue and let it soak a little, two minutes will be enough.
Start applying the second layer. It's no longer scary if you layer the paper. It will stick together and will not interfere with the separation of papier-mâché from the mask.
The third layer of papier-mâché will be fabric. Add the material to a cup of glue and water. Keep posting.
Then layer the white pieces again. And so on until there are seven of them.
Set the craft aside in a dry place to harden for 2-3 days. Please note that you cannot make a papier-mâché mask with your own hands in a day. You will need to leave the work to dry several times.
Inspect the paper and fabric papier-mâché blank and make sure it is completely dry. Trim off any uneven edges with a utility knife. Special attention pay attention to the holes.
Separate the papier-mâché from the plastic mask. It should come off easily and not become deformed. Place it back on the plastic base. This point is very important, because if it is done at the very end of the work, when the putty is applied, the putty may crack.
Now that the paper-fabric base is prepared, proceed to applying the putty.
The layer should not be too thick, otherwise it may crack when drying. To make sanding and polishing the surface easier in the future, smooth the putty with your hands dipped in water.
Leave the papier-mâché mask to dry. In no case do not dry with a hairdryer or near a radiator, since this disrupts the crystallization process.
No earlier than 24 hours later, apply a second layer of putty in the same way and leave until completely dry for at least two days.
Once the base is completely dry, remove it from the plastic base again and put it back in place.
Now start sanding and polishing. To do this, you will need sandpaper, which can be purchased at any hardware store. Sanding should be done from sandpaper with a larger grit to a smaller one.
The result should be a smooth papier-mâché blank for the Venetian mask, as in the photo.
Take white spray paint and apply it to the surface. Spray outdoors or in another room, because the aerosol can damage furniture.
Distribute the paint evenly and do not try to cover the entire surface at once. If you overdo it with the quantity, smudges may appear. It is better to carry out this procedure again as needed. Then set the craft aside until completely dry.
The beautiful Venetian papier-mâché mask is almost ready. Decide on the finishing decor and materials for decoration.
Take any design paints and start drawing.
Secure the result with clear varnish from a can. In this form, the Venetian mask can be used for its intended purpose. But if you are not going to the carnival in Venice, then make a wall panel for yourself or as a gift.
To decorate a panel with a Venetian mask according to our master class, prepare a frame and a cardboard background. Cover the cardboard with fabric and secure with a regular stapler. Make sure that the staples do not peek out from under the frame itself. Try to attach closer to the edge.
Create a composition and finally decide on the location of the central figure.
Use a glue gun to attach the mask to the background. Add flowers and drapery fabric around it, following the photo.
This is such a beautiful decor! Caring for papier-mâché is easy; carefully remove dust with a dry microfiber cloth or fluffy cleaning brush.
