Cerucal during pregnancy: pros and cons. Is it possible to take Cerucal in the early stages of pregnancy? Who drank Cerucal in the first trimester

The first weeks of pregnancy are very difficult for expectant mothers. Psychological tension arises, because even if the pregnancy is planned, the woman worries about how her life will change. And physical suffering is added to the psychological stress; most expectant mothers “get acquainted” with such an unpleasant phenomenon as toxicosis in the first weeks. Let's figure out whether Cerucal can be recommended during pregnancy, because this drug relieves nausea well.

The severity of toxicosis on early stages are different. A few lucky women experience only mild discomfort, but most women suffer from constant nausea, vomiting and other unpleasant symptoms. IN severe cases woman needs health care, but self-medication is unacceptable. Therefore, you should not listen to your girlfriends, you need to contact a specialist.

Why do you feel sick?

The development of toxicosis is promoted by two reasons:

  • a sharp change in hormonal balance associated with pregnancy;
  • metabolic products secreted by the developing embryo.

After the placenta is formed, all the negative symptoms of toxicosis will pass, but in the early stages it is rare that a woman does not experience negative feelings. In everyday life, Cerucal is often used to get rid of nausea, but is it possible to take Cerucal during pregnancy?

Description

Cerucal is an antiemetic drug; its effect is to normalize the tone of the digestive system. The active substance is metoclopramide, this substance:

  • prevents the passage of nerve impulses to the sensitive cells of the medulla oblongata;
  • makes nerve endings less sensitive, which ensure the passage of nerve impulses from the digestive organs to the centers that regulate reverse peristalsis.

In other words, the drug blocks connections between the nerve endings of the mucous membranes of the digestive organs and the brain. As a result, the brain center does not receive signals about the arrival of food and, accordingly, no signals are sent to contract the stomach muscles. Therefore, after taking the drug, nausea goes away and vomiting stops.

Available in tablet form, as well as in the form of a solution for intravenous or intramuscular administration. The method of administration is chosen by the doctor. So, if there is severe vomiting, it will be difficult to take pills; in this case, injections are recommended.

Indications

Cerucal can be prescribed to expectant mothers in the following cases:

  • to eliminate bouts of vomiting;
  • with decreased stomach tone;
  • with reflux esophagitis;
  • with impaired motility of the gallbladder.

As can be seen from the indications, the remedy can bring the greatest benefit at the beginning of pregnancy, because it is then that most expectant mothers encounter unpleasant manifestations of toxicosis. Meanwhile, the instructions indicate that the drug is prohibited for use in the initial trimester.

Advice! The instructions indicate that the drug can be recommended for use only in the fourth month, that is, at a time when the manifestations of toxicosis disappear on their own.

Why is it prohibited?

For what reason does the instruction prohibit the use of Cerucal in the early stages? The fact is that this remedy increases the tone of the stomach. And it will have the same effect on the walls of the uterus. That is, taking Cerucal can provoke the development of uterine hypertonicity, and this is unsafe for the fetus, as it can provoke the development of spontaneous abortion.

In addition, some experts believe that Cerucal can negatively affect the development of the baby. Therefore, the appointment of Cerucal in the initial trimester is justified only if the benefits of taking it significantly outweigh the possible risks.

Advice! It is clear that only a specialist can correctly assess the risks. Self-medication with Cerucal should be strictly excluded during pregnancy. Self-administration can cause harm to the baby, in addition, improper treatment can aggravate the course of toxicosis.

In what cases is use justified?

If the instructions prohibit taking Cerucal in the first 12 weeks, and after this period the drug becomes irrelevant (symptoms of toxicosis disappear on their own), then the drug can be called useless during pregnancy. However, it is still sometimes prescribed to expectant mothers. In what cases will it be useful?

  • With very severe toxicosis. This condition not only causes discomfort to the woman, but is dangerous for the baby. In the event that taking the drug creates fewer risks than no treatment, Cerucal may be prescribed.

  • In the event that toxicosis does not go away after 12 weeks. In some women, symptoms of toxicosis in the early stages continue into the second trimester. The use of Cerucal after the 13th week is considered safer, but, nevertheless, you cannot self-medicate. After all, the ability of this drug to increase the tone of the uterus does not go away, so this drug is used with caution.

Advice! Most often, toxicosis lasts longer than 12 weeks during multiple pregnancies.

How to use?

  • If vomiting occurs periodically, it is recommended to take the drug in tablets. The effect of the drug can be noticed within half an hour;
  • for severe symptoms and persistent vomiting, injections are recommended. In this case, the therapeutic effect will appear faster, vomiting will stop after about 3-5 minutes if the drug was administered intravenously or after a quarter of an hour if administered intramuscularly;

  • if tablets are prescribed, then you need to take one tablet three or four times a day;
  • It is recommended to take the tablets with plain water; drinking milk, tea or compote for this purpose is not recommended, this will reduce the therapeutic effect;
  • It is forbidden to take Cerucal tablets together with sorbents, for example, activated carbon. If two drugs are prescribed at once, then you need to take them with an interval between doses, the interval should be at least an hour;
  • when using injections, the maximum single dose is 2 ml. Up to 12 such doses can be administered per day.

Precautionary measures

You need to understand that despite the fact that Cerucal can be used from the second trimester, this drug is prescribed with great caution. The product has a number of contraindications and may cause side effects. Contraindications include:

  • intolerance to the components of the drug;
  • the presence of neoplasms dependent on the production of the hormone prolactin;
  • stomach bleeding;
  • intestinal obstruction;

  • bronchial asthma;
  • epilepsy;
  • pregnancy - first trimester, starting from the second trimester you can use the drug, but with caution;
  • the drug is prescribed with extreme caution for renal failure.

The use of the drug may provoke the development side effects. The following reactions may occur:

  • from the central nervous system - dizziness, migraines, anxiety, unreasonable feelings of panic, a tendency to depression, the appearance of tinnitus. Less common are involuntary muscle contractions in the face and neck. In exceptional cases, the development of neuroleptic syndrome was noted;
  • from the cardiovascular system: development of tachycardia, increase or decrease in blood pressure;

  • from the gastrointestinal tract: digestive disorders, changes in taste, constant dry mouth;
  • from the hormonal system: increased production of prolactin;

Advice! Prolactin is a hormone that prepares the breasts for breastfeeding, the same hormone promotes contraction of the uterus. For this reason, the use of Cerucal for the treatment of pregnant women is used only when absolutely necessary.

  • from the immune system: the development of allergic reactions, most often urticaria.

The tendency to develop negative side effects increases when recommended dosages are exceeded, as well as in patients with impaired renal function. And since in pregnant women the urinary system works with double the load, they are at risk for developing negative reactions to taking the drug. If the above or other negative reactions occur, you should consult your doctor.

So, Cerucal during pregnancy can be recommended for use in exceptional cases, when the harm from lack of treatment is greater than the risk of negative effects of the drug. The drug can only be taken as prescribed by a specialist. Self-medication and unauthorized increase in the dose of the drug should be excluded.

Cerucal during pregnancy is prescribed to women during the symptomatic treatment of toxicosis.

It is no secret that many pregnant women suffer from toxicosis in the early stages of pregnancy, most often this happens in the first 12 weeks. This malaise is manifested by vomiting, excessive salivation, nausea and general weakness. The drug Cerucal belongs to antiemetic drugs. It affects the gastric receptors, which send corresponding signals to the brain, to be more precise, to that part of it called the vomiting center. The signals are blocked, they do not reach the brain, and there is no vomiting. Ingested food is naturally moved through the intestines. Also, this drug accelerates the movement of food through the intestines, and thus intestinal function is normalized.

At the beginning of pregnancy (within 12 weeks), most women suffer from toxicosis, the most common manifestations of which include malaise, vomiting, nausea and excessive salivation. All pregnant women are exposed to toxicosis to one degree or another, but sometimes it manifests itself in a very acute form, especially in the first trimester. And if nausea is accompanied by constant vomiting, the body may become dehydrated because of this. In such cases, women are hospitalized and given intravenous medications. drugs.

With the onset of pregnancy, the hormonal balance changes dramatically, which has a direct effect on the central nervous system. Moreover, the developing fetus constantly releases metabolic products, which also negatively affects maternal health. The placenta, eliminating the symptoms of early toxicosis, appears only at the beginning of the second semester. Therefore, many pregnant women ask whether it is possible to take medications in the first trimester to relieve toxicosis? Pharmacies often offer the popular antiemetic drug Cerucal.

Information about the drug

Cerucal is honey. a drug that blocks receptors located in the duodenum and stomach (they are known to transmit corresponding signals to the vomiting center). Under the influence of the drug, signals from these receptors do not reach the brain, and, of course, there is no vomiting.

These include:

  • stomach or intestinal bleeding;
  • convulsions;
  • certain types of tumors;
  • glaucoma;
  • early stages of pregnancy.

Often Cerucal is prescribed only after the 13th week, and then only after a preliminary examination. Its use at the beginning of pregnancy, as well as during lactation, is extremely undesirable.

Cerucal during early pregnancy - why not?

This medicine, as we have already found out, strengthens the tone of the gastrointestinal tract muscles, which can also affect the tone of the uterus. And in the early stages, increased tone sometimes leads to the most negative consequences, including miscarriage. In the future, the threat will not go away, and therefore for more later Taking Cerucal is not advisable, especially without consulting a doctor. Moreover, the drug stimulates the secretion of prolactin, a hormone that promotes not only lactation, but also contraction of the uterine muscles.

Note! In some cases, when toxicosis manifests itself especially acutely, constant vomiting and poor health worsen general state health expectant mother, and this also leads to high uterine tone. At the same time, a baby can also suffer from toxicosis if a woman cannot eat or drink due to constant vomiting. Then Cerucal can be prescribed.

With somewhat greater confidence, Cerucal can be taken in the second trimester, because the threat of spontaneous abortion during this period is reduced. But don't forget about the side effects. After taking the drug, the production of adrenal hormone is stimulated, and it is known to promote the retention of salts and fluid in the body. As a result, gestosis or a more severe complication may occur. Other side effects include:

  • dizziness;
  • migraine;
  • itching and redness of the skin;
  • panic attacks;
  • constipation or, on the contrary, diarrhea;
  • tinnitus;
  • heart rhythm disturbance;
  • dry mouth;
  • fatigue, depressed mood.

Overdose of Cerucal

In case of drug overdose, the following symptoms may appear:

  • drowsiness;
  • arterial hypertension/hypotension (observed less frequently);
  • “confusion” of consciousness;
  • bradycardia;
  • convulsions;
  • motor disorders.

Note! In most cases, symptoms disappear within a day after stopping use. To date, no cases of fatal drug overdose have been identified. Treatment itself in case of overdose is carried out symptomatically.

As you can see, Cerucal is by no means a harmless drug, which during breastfeeding It is generally prohibited to accept. Pregnant women often suffer from kidney diseases, which can also cause side effects. During pregnancy, in particular in the early stages, taking Cerucal is undesirable and is possible only as prescribed by a doctor.

Video - Toxicosis in early pregnancy

Toxicosis is a common occurrence in pregnant women in the early stages of pregnancy. It is accompanied by severe nausea and prolonged vomiting. As a rule, by the middle of the term, unpleasant symptoms disappear, but some women still have signs of gastrointestinal dysfunction. For such symptoms, doctors prescribe antiemetic medications, including Cerucal. Is it allowed to take Cerucal during pregnancy? Let's consider a list of indications and contraindications for its use.

Cerucal: general description of the drug

The drug Cerucal is produced in two forms:

  • solution for intramuscular and intravenous injections in ampoules of 2 ml;
  • tablets are round, whitish in color, flat.

The active component of Cerucal is metoclopramide. This is an antiemetic substance, the principle of action of which is based on blocking dopamine and serotonin receptors.

The neurotransmitter dopamine reduces peristalsis of the digestive tract, relaxes the esophageal sphincter and promotes the occurrence of gastroesophageal and duodenogastric reflux. Dopamine has a stimulating effect on the chemoreceptors of the trigger zone and vomiting center in the brain, thereby provoking nausea and vomiting.

By blocking dopamine receptors, metoclopramide eliminates the possible effects of the neurotransmitter and has an antiemetic effect. Thus, the drug Cerucal helps improve intestinal motility, relieves nausea and vomiting, and accelerates the movement of food from the stomach further into the intestines.

Cerucal is absorbed quite quickly from the gastrointestinal tract and metabolized in the liver. It is excreted from the body through the kidneys within 24 hours.

Indications for use by pregnant women in early and late stages

In what cases is Cerucal prescribed? Indications for use:

  • nausea and vomiting;
  • lack of muscle tone of the digestive organs;
  • dysfunction of bile duct motility;
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease - release of stomach contents into the esophagus;
  • pyloric stenosis - narrowing of the opening between the stomach and duodenum;
  • gastroparesis in diabetes mellitus;
  • the need to enhance gastrointestinal peristalsis before X-ray contrast examination or duodenal intubation.

Can expectant mothers take Cerucal?

The drug has a teratogenic property, that is, it is able to penetrate the child’s body and cause developmental abnormalities. In the first trimester, when the placental barrier has not yet formed, taking Cerucal is strictly prohibited. Starting from the second trimester, the medicine can be taken, but only with a doctor's prescription.

Is it okay to take the drug if you have toxicosis? Nausea, vomiting, hiccups, heartburn - all these are common symptoms that often accompany early pregnancy. Judging by the instructions, Cerucal is just capable of coping with these manifestations. However, toxicosis does not threaten the health of the mother and child; this is a completely normal phenomenon, which indicates hormonal changes in the woman’s body. You should not risk the fetus and take a dangerous medicine to alleviate the symptoms of toxicosis.

If severe toxicosis accompanies a woman even in the later stages of pregnancy, the doctor may decide to use the drug. Taking pills or injections is done only after a thorough examination; the risk from using the medication should be lower than the threat to the health of the expectant mother and child.

Contraindications and side effects

What is a contraindication to the use of Cerucal, except for early pregnancy? The medication cannot be used for the following ailments and conditions:

  • pheochromocytoma is a benign hormone-dependent tumor of chromaffin cells of the sympathoadrenal system of the adrenal glands;
  • prolactinoma is a benign hormone-dependent tumor of the pituitary gland;
  • intestinal obstruction;
  • perforation of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • bleeding of the digestive tract;
  • epilepsy;
  • neuroleptic extrapyramidal deviations.

The dose of Cerucal is reduced if the functioning of the liver and kidneys is impaired. This is due to the excretion of metoclopramide through these organs. You should also use the drug with caution if you have high blood pressure and bronchial asthma.

What side effects may occur while taking Cerucal? Their list is impressive, however, if you use the medicine according to your doctor’s instructions, the occurrence of side effects can be minimized.

The table shows a list of side effects of Cerucal:

No.Organ systemSide effect
1 NervousFatigue, tinnitus, headache, anxiety, drowsiness, depression. Tics and spasms of the facial muscles may appear.
2 HematopoiesisAgranulocytosis is a decrease in the number of leukocytes due to an increase in granulocytes and monocytes in the blood. Leads to increased susceptibility to infections.
3 CardiovascularIncreased heart rate, increased or, conversely, decreased blood pressure.
4 DigestiveDifficulty defecating or loose stools, dry mouth.

What are the dangers of an overdose of Cerucal? A pregnant woman will feel drowsiness, irritability, and increased anxiety. Her consciousness will begin to become confused, her blood pressure will rise or, on the contrary, drop. If such symptoms appear, you should immediately stop taking the medication.

Instructions for use of tablets and solution for injection

How should Cerucal be used? Instructions for use of tablets for adults indicate that you should drink 1 tablet three times a day. The maximum daily dose is 60 g, which corresponds to 6 tablets.

The solution is injected intramuscularly or intravenously, 1 ampoule, which is equal to 10 mg of metoclopramide, three times a day. How long the therapy will last is determined by the doctor, looking at the individual course of the disease.

If a pregnant woman is in the hospital, then instead of injections she is often given an IV with Cerucal. The drug administered through a dropper begins to act much faster - within 2-3 minutes. Such measures are taken if it is urgently necessary to stop an attack of vomiting. The injection begins to act only after 15 minutes, and you will have to wait even longer for the tablet to take effect.

If therapy with Cerucal is necessary, you need to tell the doctor whether the pregnant woman is taking any additional medications, because this drug is not compatible with all medications:

  • enhances the absorption of acetylsalicylic acid, paracetamol, ethanol, diazepam, zopiclone, mexiletine, mefloquine, morphine, cyclosporine;
  • reduces the absorption of nitrofurantoin, cabergoline, ketaprofen;
  • combination with phenothiazine neuroleptics (Aminazine, Propazine, Levomepromazine) increases the risk of extrapyramidal reactions;
  • use together with anticholinergic medications (Cyclodol, Diphenhydramine) reduces the effectiveness of both drugs.

Analogs and prices

How much does Cerucal cost? The cost of the medication depends on the pricing policy of a particular pharmacy. On average, tablets cost 120 rubles for 50 pieces. The price of ampoules is 230 rubles for 10 pieces.

What to do if for some reason it is not possible to buy this medicinal substance in a pharmacy or its use is prohibited? In such cases, it is necessary to use analogues.

The table shows a list of analogues of Cerucal:

No.NameActive ingredientRelease formOperating principlespecial instructions
1 KinedrylCaffeine, moxastinePillsHistamine receptor blocker, has antihistamine, sedative, antiemetic, anticholinergic effects.Can be taken during pregnancy only with the permission of a doctor. May have a negative effect on the embryo.
2 PassengersDomperidoneChewable tabletsBlocks dopamine receptors, eliminates nausea and vomiting.It is allowed to drink while carrying a child, with caution in the early stages.
3 MotinormDomperidoneSyrup, tabletsSoothes vomiting, nausea, hiccups.It is allowed to use during pregnancy, but only with the permission of a doctor.
4 MotiliumDomperidoneTablets, suspensionThe active ingredient is a dopamine antagonist, due to which it has an antiemetic effect.Use with caution during pregnancy; there is no proven data on safety for the fetus.

Cerucal is a prescription drug and should only be taken after consultation with a doctor. It is forbidden to prescribe it to yourself, because self-medication can cause irreparable harm to the unborn child.

During pregnancy, many women encounter such an unpleasant phenomenon as early toxicosis, accompanied by constant nausea, vomiting, salivation and deterioration in general well-being. This condition is caused by changes in hormonal levels and the release of fetal metabolic products into the general bloodstream. Typically, toxicosis goes away after the placenta is formed, but before that, expectant mothers need help. To relieve attacks of vomiting, doctors prescribe Cerucal, but with numerous reservations.

How the drug works

Cerucal is a medication that stops attacks of vomiting and normalizes the motility of the gastrointestinal tract. The effectiveness of the drug is due to the “work” of its active component - metoclopramide, which suppresses the urge to vomit at the level of the central nervous system.

The active substance penetrates the digestive tract through the bloodstream and blocks receptors that transmit signals to a special zone located in the brain. As a result, the nervous system does not receive information from stimuli, and vomiting stops. Additionally, hiccups also disappear, since the vomiting center is also responsible for it.

In addition to the main therapeutic effect, the use of Cerucal is accompanied by additional therapeutic effects:

  • the movement of food through the esophagus and intestines is accelerated by stimulating peristalsis;
  • the backflow of stomach contents into the esophagus is prevented;
  • normalizes the flow of bile from the gallbladder into the duodenum.

Is Cerucal allowed during pregnancy, including in the early stages?

The official medical manual for the drug states that the antiemetic is prohibited for use in the early stages of pregnancy - up to 12 weeks inclusive. In the second and third trimesters, the medication is prescribed if the benefit to the woman outweighs the potential harm to the child. In addition, you should refrain from taking Cerucal during lactation.

What are the reasons for such strict restrictions? The drug activates the muscles of the digestive organs, which is fraught with an increase in uterine tone and, as a result, spontaneous abortion in the first weeks of pregnancy. Taking Tsekural in late stages of gestation without first consulting a doctor may result in premature birth.

US FDA food products and drugs (FDA) assigned Cerucal category B. In experimental studies on animals, the active substance, administered even in doses many times higher than normal, did not have a negative effect on embryos. But since adequate scientific experiments have not been conducted on women, the drug is approved during pregnancy only for strict medical reasons.

But what to do if vomiting bothers expectant mothers in the first trimester? In the case of severe early toxicosis, accompanied by constant bouts of vomiting and deterioration in general well-being, the doctor may make an exception and prescribe Cerucal, but after carefully weighing all the risks, examining the woman, and studying the nature of the pregnancy.

When is it prescribed?

The main reason for prescribing Cerucal during pregnancy is toxicosis of varying severity. In the annotation to the remedy there are other diseases and conditions for which the doctor can prescribe this medicinal product. Among them:

  • nausea and vomiting;
  • decreased or absent intestinal tone;
  • impaired motor activity of the stomach in diabetes;
  • digestive system disorders (belching, heartburn);
  • reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus;
  • impaired motility of the biliary tract;
  • Frequent, prolonged hiccups.

Pills or injections?

In pharmacy chains, this drug is presented in two forms:

  • tablets for oral administration.
  • injection.

The effect of the drug is felt 60 minutes after oral administration, 15 minutes after intramuscular administration and 2-3 minutes after intravenous injections. The active substance easily penetrates the barrier between the circulatory system and the central nervous system, and is also excreted in breast milk.

If toxicosis is severe or it is necessary to immediately stop vomiting, a liquid form of the drug is prescribed. Typically, Cerucal injection is performed in a hospital setting, since incorrect administration of the product can lead to skin irritation or cause severe allergic reactions.

The liquid form of Cerucal is additionally prescribed in preparation for a diagnostic examination of the digestive system.

Contraindications and side effects

Expectant mothers should take Cerucal with great caution, taking into account a number of contraindications indicated in the instructions. In addition to the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, direct contraindications include the following diseases and pathological conditions:

  • pheochromocytoma (hormonally active tumor formation in the adrenal glands);
  • prolactinoma (tumor formation of the pituitary gland associated with excessive production of the hormone prolactin);
  • intestinal obstruction;
  • bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract;
  • epileptic seizures;
  • extrapyramidal movement disorders;
  • narrowing of the outlet of the pylorus of the stomach;
  • a through hole in the walls of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • hypersensitivity to the active and auxiliary substances of the drug.

Important! The components of the drug may increase the release of mineralocorticoids (adrenal hormones), which retain salts and fluids in the body. Therefore, incorrect use of Cerucal increases the risk of gestosis - late toxicosis, manifested by edema, high blood pressure and convulsions.

Taking Cerucal at different frequencies causes undesirable consequences from different organs and systems of the body:

  • nervous system:
    • imbalance;
    • increased anxiety;
    • depression;
    • motor restlessness;
    • fatigue and drowsiness;
    • headache;
  • circulatory system:
    • agranulocytosis (decrease in the number of leukocytes in the blood);
  • the cardiovascular system:
    • increased heart rate;
    • hypertension;
    • hypotension;
  • digestive organs:
    • constipation;
    • diarrhea;
    • dry mouth;
  • allergic manifestations:
    • skin rashes;
    • hives;
    • dyspnea.

Also, the active substance can provoke muscle hypertonicity, which can be dangerous if there is a threat of miscarriage.

The frequency of side effects depends on the dose and duration of treatment with Cerucal. Severe adverse reactions occur extremely rarely, but they require immediate discontinuation of the drug. In other cases, after consultation with a doctor, the dosage may be reduced.

Instructions for safe use

The dosage and duration of taking the antiemetic drug is determined by the attending physician after examining and interviewing the pregnant patient. The choice of the preferred dosage form of the drug depends on the severity of negative symptoms.

Most often, tablets are prescribed for treatment at home and for moderate manifestations of toxicosis.. When taking the tablet form of the drug, it is recommended to follow the following rules:

  • The medicine is taken half an hour before meals in the prescribed dosage, no more than 3-4 times a day;
  • The tablet should be taken with still water; other drinks reduce the therapeutic effect.

The duration of therapy is individual in each case, but usually the course does not exceed 4 weeks.

How can you replace Cerucal?

It should be remembered that the question of replacing the drug can only be decided by the attending doctor. In pharmacy chains today there is a large selection of medicines synonymous with Cerucal, which contain the same active ingredient - metoclopramide. Synonyms of the drug include:

  • Metamol;
  • Metoclopramide;
  • Vero-metoclopramide;
  • Perinorm
  • Tseruglan.

Functional analogues of Cerucal can be considered medications that also prevent or stop vomiting, but contain other active ingredients.
