Preface

Wide popularity that falls to the share of one or another new movement, discovery or invention is always fraught with great danger. No matter how tempting the prospect of a new word penetrating into the very thick of the broad strata of the population, no matter how great and worthy the task is to make a new conquest of thought the property of one and all, in all, almost without exception, cases, this desirable path of popularization is inevitably associated with vulgarization, with distortion and perversion of the “new word”.

Emile Coue's method of self-hypnosis was not destined to escape this fate. A number of reasons contributed to its wide dissemination: extreme accessibility and ease of use, many successful results of which he can rightfully be proud, and, finally, the personal charm of Coue himself, in whom rare fanaticism in serving the idea was combined with complete selflessness and the greatest modesty.

But success inevitably gave rise to a hobby, a kind of “fashion”. And with this were inextricably linked those distortions that completely obscure the essence of the new method and, as a result, - thanks to perverted interpretation and incorrect application - undermine confidence in it. Quite right, that’s why Prof. C. Baudouin, a follower of Coue and his scientific interpreter, who in the preface to his book: “La psychologie de la suggestion et de l"autosuggestion” says: “Not moderately fanatical adherents of the method are his worst enemies. They go to the most absurd exaggerations , which discredit the new method in the eyes of serious people.”

This sad phenomenon must be combated in every possible way. It is absolutely certain that the explanation of the true essence of the method, its role and significance and its correct application should be the main task of all those who, in one way or another, have witnessed its beneficial effects.

In this regard, the first reproach should be sent to representatives of scientific medicine, doctors. “I have often been convinced,” says Prof. Baudouin, “that the most fierce attacks on the new method come from those scientists who did not even take the trouble, along with Coue’s own book, to familiarize themselves with my works.” Guided by the current, vulgarized idea of the method, doctors very often dismiss it with disdain, as witchcraft, or, at best, warn against it as something harmful and dangerous.

The Coue method has no common ground with witchcraft and other medical quackery. Based entirely on the doctrine of the “unconscious” (or subconscious), adopted by scientific medicine, the method of self-hypnosis as developed by Prof. Baudouin's theoretical justification may, naturally, cause certain objections, this or that serious criticism - he may undergo certain changes and additions in the period of further scientific work - but, in any case, the method itself, as such, - with from the point of view of a bold formulation of the problem, and from the point of view of undeniable beneficial results, it deserves the closest attention and serious study.

As for the imaginary harm and danger associated with the use of the method, all attacks on this matter were and are reduced exclusively to one thing: the method of self-hypnosis, being able to eliminate painful symptoms, and not the root cause of a particular illness, distracts the supposedly sick person from the need for systematic medical treatment and takes him away from the influence of the doctor. Without delving into the question of the limits of influence of the method, it is necessary to sharply and decisively refute the conclusion drawn from here. Neither the creator of the method himself, nor his numerous followers, who number quite a few prominent and famous doctors in their ranks, never undermined reverence for scientific medicine, did not oppose the method of self-hypnosis to it, and did not “steal away”

patient from the doctor. On the contrary, in the proposed book by Emile Coue, and in all the works of his students and friends, and, finally, in all sessions of mass and individual preparation for the perception of the method, the premise of the need for conventional forms of medical treatment is everywhere placed at the forefront. The idea is persistently and intelligibly introduced to patients: “if you have not yet been to the doctor, go to him earlier; if you are already being treated, continue your treatment as usual.” The method of self-hypnosis can and should be tried as the only method of treatment only in those cases when medicine is either powerless in the fight against the disease, or when it itself points the patient down this path, consciously realizing that with the illness there is a psychogenic origin, it is most advisable to fight with an active and direct impact on the psyche. In all other cases, the worthy and responsible task of the new method is to be a necessary, effective support to conventional forms of treatment.

It is natural, therefore, that the future of the self-hypnosis method will be determined, in our opinion, by its further theoretical development and a serious, conscientious and thoughtful attitude on the part of practicing doctors.

***

The book presented to the attention of readers cannot be considered an exhaustive scientific study. The theoretical development of the method, as already indicated, is devoted to the solid work of Prof. Baudouin.

The objectives of Emile Coue's book are completely different. These same other tasks determine his entire life and all his fruitful activity.

Not being an armchair scientist by nature, having only come close to the problem that interested him in adulthood and after long observations having “constructed” his method, Coue from the very beginning devoted all his strength to its practical application. Working tirelessly, day after day, year after year, he gave - and continues to give - tens of thousands of examples

high proof practical the value of the new method.

His goal is to help everyone. He is in a hurry to live. Tens and hundreds of sufferers have been waiting for him since the morning. He knows, he is convinced that by teaching them how to use the method of self-hypnosis, he will help them. He does not and cannot have time for theoretical work, for deepening the method. He belongs to people, to a living cause, to love for one’s neighbor, and it is not without reason that in France he earned the name “friend of humanity.”

Coue's work lasts continuously for about 25 years. But its beginning dates back to an even earlier period: in the 80s of the last century, he, a modest pharmacist from a small town near Nancy, began to carefully look at the work of famous French scientists, prof. Liebeau and Bernheim, the founders of “scientific hypnotism.” Noticing the practical shortcomings of hypnotic treatment, vigilantly monitoring the further health of numerous patients, Coue thought about creating his own method. Instead of the principle of subordinating the patient’s psyche to the influence of a hypnotist, he based it from the very beginning on the development of the patient’s initiative. From a special and narrow in its practical application therapeutic form of hypnotic suggestion, Coue thus moved on to self-hypnosis, which, in his opinion, is a truly powerful, truly universal human mental ability. A further phase in the development of the method was the establishment of the relationship between conscious will and imagination. This question is presented in detail and clearly on the following pages. Here it is enough just to note that this principle represents an attempt to consistently develop the doctrine of the subconscious, constructed by the school of Freud, Breuer and others.

For a long time - over 15 years - Coue did not dare to apply his new method. The first practical attempts dating back to the beginning of this century fully confirmed his assumptions. At first, cautiously and timidly - in the circle of close friends and relatives - then increasingly expanding the circle of his patients, Coue, by the beginning of the war, already had a wide audience. The war did not stop his work, but, of course, narrowed its scope. However, even under fire from German guns, he continued to provide his active and selfless assistance in Nancy.

Conscious self-hypnosis of Emile Coue

Our actions are controlled not by will, but by imagination. In a conflict between will and imagination, the latter always wins. The most important human ability is imagination, not will.

Emile Coue (1857–1926) was a French psychotherapist who became famous thanks to the method of voluntary self-hypnosis he discovered (“Coue’s method”). He received a degree in pharmacology in 1876. Upon completion of his studies, he entered into medical practice in Troyes, during which he discovered that the effectiveness of treatment is significantly influenced by the patient’s conviction in the healing properties of the medicine offered to him.

Having studied hypnotism in Paris under the guidance of Bernheim and Liebeau and gained sufficient experience, in 1910, at the age of 53, he opened a psychotherapy clinic in Nancy, which he headed until his death.

Having already had extensive experience in psychotherapeutic assistance, he abandoned classical hypnosis, a very common method at that time, creating a form of self-hypnosis that was brilliant in its simplicity. Self-hypnosis, in his opinion, is a powerful and universal human mental ability. And in general, Coue paid more attention to a person’s imagination, his feelings, than to his will. Which is equally true in psychotherapy and in life. But, amazingly, he created a form of programming that limits the imagination.

Here is an excerpt from his book “Conscious self-hypnosis as a path to self-mastery” (chapter “How to practically apply conscious self-hypnosis”).

Every morning when you wake up, and every evening before you go to sleep, you should close your eyes and, without trying to concentrate on what you are saying, say twenty times, counting on a string with twenty knots - and, moreover, loud enough to hear your own words , - the following phrase: “Every day I feel better and better in all respects.” Since the words “in all respects” refer to absolutely everything, it is useless to use, in addition, special self-hypnosis.

This self-hypnosis should be done as simply as possible, directly, mechanically, and therefore without the slightest tension.

In this way, the formula - through the organ of hearing - penetrates mechanically into our unconscious “I” and, once there, immediately has a corresponding effect.

This method must be applied throughout life: it is as preventive as it is healing.

If during the day or night you experience a physical or mental illness, then first of all you must assimilate the firm confidence that you will not consciously intensify it even more, but, on the contrary, will make it pass as quickly as possible. After this, try to remain completely alone, close your eyes and, stroking your forehead with your hand, if we are talking about mental suffering, or on a sore spot, if you have a physical ailment, repeat out loud as quickly as possible: “It passes, it passes, it passes.” ! - until you feel better. With some skill, physical or mental pain disappears after 20–25 seconds. If necessary, this technique can be repeated several times.

Actually, this meditation technique is thousands of years old. And Emile Coue gets along quite well without mentioning the names of God.

The universality of the Coue method lies in its simplicity - only twenty repetitions of a very short phrase in the morning and evening. And instead of “Lord, have mercy on me a sinner” - “Every day I feel better and better in all respects.” The last phrase is more positive and encourages the meditator to solve his problems on his own. This is the correct psychotherapeutic approach.

Is the method effective?

M. M., a hosiery maker by trade, from Saint-Savin near Tours. Due to damage to the lower part of the spine, he was paralyzed for two years. Paralysis extends only to the lower limbs. Due to the almost complete cessation of blood circulation, the legs became swollen and blue. Various ways Treatments, not excluding antisyphilitic ones, did not produce any results.

The preparatory experiments were very successful. Suggestion on my part. The patient practices self-hypnosis for a week. After this time, unnoticeable, but still gratifying, as the first symptom, movements of the left leg. Repeated suggestion. After the second week there was significant improvement. This improvement then progressed continuously: along with the weakening of paralysis, the swelling of the legs began to subside. After eleven months of treatment, on November 1, 1906, the patient independently walked down the stairs and walked 800 m along the street. In July 1907, he returned to the factory, where he has been working to this day, without experiencing any trace of paralysis.

An eleven-year-old boy, M. from Troyes, suffered from involuntary urination: something that happens only to the smallest children happened to him both night and day. In addition, he was also a kleptomaniac and an incredible liar. At my mother's request, I began to make suggestions. After the first session, the unpleasant phenomena stopped during the day, but continued at night. Little by little, however, they happened less and less often, and after a few months the boy got rid of them completely. Along with this, his kleptomania also weakened, and after six months he stopped stealing completely.

This boy's eighteen-year-old brother had an absolutely incredible hatred for his third brother. As soon as he drank a little too much, he had a desire to rush at his brother with a knife and kill him. He was convinced that sooner or later he would do this, and at the same time he imagined how, after the murder, he would rush sobbing to the corpse of his victim. I also applied suggestion to him. His results were amazing. He was healed from the very first session. His hatred for his brother completely disappeared. They became best friends and tried to please each other in everything.

I have been following this young man for a long time. He recovered once and for all.

“I’m not a miracle worker or a healer - I don’t heal or treat anyone - I only teach people how they can heal and treat themselves,” said Coue. But he himself possessed sufficient power of suggestion - or magnetism, as they said then. And he worked miracles. And he healed.

Thirteen year old boy B. in January 1912 enters hospital; he has extremely severe heart disease, manifested by abnormal, extremely labored breathing. He is constantly out of breath and can only move in slow and small steps. The doctor who uses it, one of our best clinicians, predicts an inevitable and quick sad outcome.

In February the patient leaves the hospital; his condition didn't improve at all. A friend of his parents brings him to me. When I saw him, from the first minute I thought that he was really doomed. However, I did some preparatory experiments with it. The results were excellent. After giving him a suggestion and recommending that he use self-hypnosis, I asked him to come again every other day. When he appeared, to my great amazement, I stated very noticeable improvement in breathing and gait. Repeated suggestion. More two days later - a new improvement. And so from session to session.

The recovery proceeded at such a rapid pace that within three weeks after the first session my little patient could go on foot with his mother to the mountains in Ville.

He breathes freely, almost completely normally; he doesn’t feel out of breath when walking and easily climbs stairs, which was previously impossible for him. Since the improvement is continuously progressing, at the end of May he asks me for permission to go to his grandmother in Carignan. Considering his good health, I agree. He leaves and writes me letters from time to time. His health is getting better: he eats with appetite, his digestion is good, his metabolism is in perfect order; the difficulty in breathing has completely disappeared - he not only walks a lot, but even runs and catches butterflies.

He returns in October. I barely recognize him. The small, weak, hunched boy who said goodbye to me in May turned into a tall, slender young man. His face breathes health. He grew 4 inches and gained 19 pounds. He lives a normal life, easily runs up stairs, rides a bike and plays football with his friends.

Ten-year-old boy E. Sh., Bolshaya Street, 19 (refugee from Metz). Heart disease of unknown nature. Every night my throat bleeds.

First session in July 1915. After a few days the bleeding decreases. The condition is constantly getting better. By the end of November the blood no longer appears at all. Until August 1916, no relapse was observed.

Thirteen year old girlX. fromGeneva. An ulcer on the temple, according to several doctors, is of tuberculosis origin. For a year and a half, this ulcer was treated unsuccessfully with a variety of methods. Finally, they are taken to Baudouin, Coue's student in Geneva. He uses suggestion and asks to bring the girl again in a week. After this period, the ulcer completely heals!!!

Yu, 55, from Maxeville. Varicose ulcer for over one and a half years. First session in September 1915; the second one in a week. After two weeks, complete recovery.

3. also from Geneva, For 17 years, contracture of the right leg, due to surgery for an abscess above the knee. She turns to Baudouin with a request to apply suggestion to her. From the very first session, the leg bends and unbends freely. (There is no doubt that in this case there is a purely mental cause of the disease),

G., 48 years old, from Bran. On January 15, he was declared unfit for military service due to chronic bronchitis of a specific (tuberculosis) nature. The disease is progressing every day.

In October 1915 he came to me. Improvement occurs immediately and progresses continuously. Currently, although he has not fully recovered, he feels much better.

B. - during twenty four has been suffering from inflammation of the frontal sinus for years, which required eleven operations. Despite vigorous treatment, the inflammation did not go away and caused unbearable suffering. The patient's physical condition is extremely sad: almost continuous severe pain, lack of appetite, complete weakness; inability to move, read, insomnia, etc. Mental suffering is no less painful, despite the use of Bernheim in Nancy, Degerin in Bern and X. in Strasbourg. The condition not only does not improve, but gets worse every day.

On the advice of one of my patients, the patient came to me in September 1915. From the very first day rapid improvement began, and at the present time (1923) he feels excellent. This is positively the resurrection from the dead.

N., 18 years old, Nancy, cellier street. Pott's disease (curvature of the spine). Appears to me at the beginning of 1914. The upper body is in a plaster corset for six months. He comes to sessions regularly twice a week and uses self-hypnosis every morning and evening. Improvement comes very quickly. After a short time, the patient can remove the corset. In April 1916 I saw him again. He has completely recovered and is serving as a postman; before that he was an orderly at the now closed Nancy hospital.

D. from Jarville. Paralysis of the left eyelid. After injections in the hospital, the eyelid rises; but the eye exhibits an external squint of over 45 degrees. The operation seems inevitable. Comes to me. Thanks to the use of self-suggestion, the eye gradually returns to its normal position.

L. from Nancy. For over ten years, continuous pain in the right side of the face. I contacted a number of doctors: not the slightest result. Surgery required. The patient arrives on July 25, 1916. The improvement is immediate. After ten days the pain completely disappears. Until December 20 of the same year, when I received the last letter from the patient, there was no relapse.

Eight-year-old boy Maurice T. from Nancy. Clubfoot. The first operation corrects the left leg slightly; the right one remains the same. Two repeated operations were completely unsuccessful.

The child was brought to me for the first time in February 1915. Thanks to orthotics that keep his legs in a normal position, he walks fairly well.

The very first session causes immediate improvement; after the second, the child begins to walk in ordinary shoes. Every day his legs are straightening more and more. On April 17, 1916, he was completely healthy. True, his right leg is somewhat weak, but this is explained by the sprain that he suffered on January 20th.

X. from Bleuville. The ulcer on the left leg appears to be of a specific origin. A slight sprain caused significant swelling, accompanied by severe pain. Various treatment methods do not give any results. Over time, the patient develops an abscess, which apparently indicates the presence of a caries beetle. Despite constant treatment, walking becomes more and more difficult and painful. On the advice of one of my old, recovered patients, she turns to me. From the very first sessions, a significant improvement is noticed. Little by little the swelling goes down, the pain becomes less and less, the pus stops, and eventually the ulcer heals. This process takes several months. Currently the leg is almost in normal condition. Although the pain and swelling have completely disappeared, due to incomplete flexion of the leg, the patient is slightly limping.

R. from Chavigny. For ten years, inflammation of the uterus. Appears at the end of July 1916. Immediate improvement. Discharge and pain quickly decrease. On September 20, there is no more discharge or pain. Menstruation, which previously lasted from eight to ten days, lasts no more than four.

Sixteen-year-old girl D. from Mirecourt. Nervous attacks for three years. At first at significant intervals, then more and more often. Before his first visit to me (April 1, 1917), he had three seizures in two weeks. After treatment - until April 18 - not a single one.

Along with the seizures, after the first session the headaches from which the patient suffered almost continuously stopped.

M., 43 years old, from Malzeville. She applied at the end of 1916 due to severe migraines that tormented her all her life. After several sessions, the headaches completely disappear.

Two months later, a healing of a female illness (prolapse of the uterus) was discovered, which she told me nothing about and which she had never thought about when she used self-hypnosis. (This result should be attributed to the words "In every way", contained in the formula pronounced morning and evening).

G., 40 years old, from Nancy. September 1914, a varicose wound, which she unsuccessfully treats, following all the prescriptions of her family doctor. The lower leg is extremely swollen(an ulcer the size of a two-franc coin is located on top of the ankle and reaches the bone); significant inflammation, profuse pus and unusually severe pain.

The patient came to me for the first time in April 1916. The improvement, detected after the first session, progresses continuously. February 18 tumor absolutely fell off, the pain and scabies disappeared. The ulcer is still there, but it’s barely the size of a pea and only two or three millimeters deep; Suppuration is insignificant. In 1920, the patient had been completely healthy for a long time.

X. from Chauzy-le-Roi. Presents at one general session in July 1916, uses self-hypnosis every morning and evening. In October of the same year, she reports that she was cured of uterine prolapse, which she had suffered from for over twenty years. There was no relapse until April 1920 (see the case of M., 43 years old, from Malzeville).

J., 60 years old, from Nancy, Appears on July 20, 1917 due to severe pain in his right leg. Significant swelling along the entire length of the leg. He can barely walk and groans in pain all the time. After the session, to her great amazement, she walks away with a completely normal gait and does not feel any pain. He comes back four days later and says that the pain and swelling have completely disappeared. Along with this, her pain stopped and the inflammation of the intestines, which she had suffered from for a very long time, went away. In November of the same year she was still quite healthy.

Fifteen-year-old girl G.L. from Nancy. He has stuttered since childhood. Appears on July 20, 1917. The stuttering goes away immediately. A month later I see her again - she has completely recovered.

F., 60 years old, from Nancy. For five years, rheumatic pain in the shoulders and left leg. Walks with difficulty, leaning on a stick, can raise his arms no higher than shoulder level. After the first session, on September 17, 1917, the pain completely disappeared, and the patient could not only walk with a normal, long step, but even run. Hands move freely in all directions. In November of the same year, the condition was still excellent.

S, 48 years old, from Bouziers-aux-Dames. He comes for the first time on April 20, 1917, with a varicose ulcer on his left leg, the size of a five-franc piece; He has had the ulcer for fifteen years. April 27 Ulcer is healing. On May 4, I stated that there was no relapse. Since then I have not seen the patient again.

L., 63 years old. She has been suffering from facial pain for ten years. I tried all kinds of treatment, but to no avail. She is advised to have surgery, but she categorically refuses. Comes for the first time on July 25, 1916. After four days the pain disappears. I am healthy to this day.

M. from Nancy. For thirteen years, inflammation of the uterus. Severe pain, bleeding and pain. Menstruation, also extremely painful, every 22-23 days; lasts 10-12 days.

Appears for the first time on November 15, 1917 and then regularly once a week. After the first session there is a noticeable improvement that progresses quickly. At the beginning of January 1918, the inflammation of the uterus completely disappeared. Menstruation is much more regular and pain-free. The knee pain that the patient had been experiencing since she was 13 years old also completely disappears.

K. from Enville. Thirteen years of attacks of rheumatic pain in the right knee joint. A particularly severe attack five years ago. In this case, not only the knee, but the entire leg swells. The lower part of the leg is twisted, so that the patient has great difficulty moving with a stick or crutch.

First visit November 5, 1917. Leaves me without a stick and without a crutch. Since then he has not resorted to using a crutch at all; occasionally he only walks with a stick. Pain in the knee is sometimes felt, but very minor.

M. from Enville. For six months there has been pain in the right knee; the knee is swollen and the patient cannot bend her leg.

First visit December 7, 1917. On January 4, 1918, she appeared again and reported that the pain had almost completely disappeared and that she was walking freely. After the session on January 4, the pain completely disappeared. There is no difficulty in walking.

Excerpts from letters addressed to E. Coue

Just two hours ago the test results for the position of teacher were posted. in English, and I hasten to tell you how it all happened. I passed the oral test brilliantly and, while waiting for it, I almost didn’t feel that disgusting heartbeat that always makes me feel sick.

Answering the questions, I myself was amazed at my calmness. I impressed everyone present as a person completely in control of himself. The oral test, which I feared most, ended most favorably for me.

I was accepted as the second candidate and am eternally grateful to you for your assistance - I owe my success to him alone... etc.

In... (Gymnasium teacher)

(We are talking about a young girl who, due to strong nervous excitement, could not pass the test in 1915. Under the influence of self-hypnosis, the excitement disappeared, and she passed the test as the second of two hundred examinees).

It gives me true joy to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the enormous benefit that your method has brought me. Before I turned to you, I couldn’t walk a hundred meters without getting out of breath. Now I can walk several kilometers without the slightest fatigue. For the distance between rue du Bord-de-1"Eau and rue des Glacis, that is, about four kilometers, I spend no more than 40 minutes and several times a day. The asthma from which I suffered so much is almost completely disappeared.

Let me thank you once again for the kindness you have shown.

Paul S. (Nancy, rue de Strasbourg)

I had two varicose ulcers, one on each leg. The ulcer on the right leg, the size of a palm, has completely healed. It was as if by some miracle she had disappeared.

I didn't get out of bed for several weeks. Almost now, after the arrival of your letter, the ulcer has healed, and I finally got up. The ulcer on my right leg is not completely gone yet, but I am convinced that it will heal soon.

Morning and evening I pronounce and will always pronounce the formula that you recommended to me and which I have great faith in.

In conclusion, I will also mention that I could not touch my feet all the time - they were hard as stone. Now I can press them as much as I want and don’t feel the slightest pain. I walk completely freely. What happiness...

Let me express my sincere gratitude to you. Thanks to you, I avoided an extremely dangerous operation. I’ll say more: you literally saved my life, because your method of self-hypnosis healed me from terrible constipation, which lasted 19

days, while neither medicine nor all sorts of other treatments brought me any benefit.

Since I followed your advice and began to apply your excellent method, I have completely recovered.

I don’t know how to thank you for the joy I feel from my recovery. I suffered from asthma attacks for more than 15 years. Every night I had incredibly painful asthma attacks. Thanks to your amazing method, and especially after I attended one of your sessions, the seizures, as if by magic, disappeared. This is positively a miracle, since several doctors told me that asthma cannot be cured.

Before writing to you, I wanted to talk to my husband’s uncle, Professor M., the chief physician at the hospital in Tenon. Great was his surprise when he saw his nephew healthy, who for fifteen years had not spent a single night without an attack of severe suffocation. We tried absolutely everything, contacted the luminaries of science in everything, but nothing helped. You alone did what others were completely powerless to do. My husband is feeling well. He is not yet completely cured, but do not forget that he was ill for fifteen years.

Dr. J. wanted to write to you - he is completely puzzled by the successes achieved by your method. Professor M. (he has occupied the department for twenty years) really wants to get to know you. He is overjoyed that his nephew is almost completely cured.

The next time you are in Paris, he will be glad to see you.

Dr. B; also from time to time visits his patient, whom he once abandoned. After all, I turned to you only after everything had really been tried.

I am sincerely grateful to you for introducing me to a new method of treatment. It has a positively miraculous effect. As if with the magic wand of a virtuous fairy, you achieve the most amazing results with the most ordinary means. Having been extremely interested in your experiments and having experienced the effects of your method on myself, I now apply it with enthusiasm to others. I have become your ardent and zealous follower.

I had a prolapsed uterus for eight years. Now, after using your method, I have completely recovered. How can I thank you?

***

For eleven years in a row I suffered unbearably. I had asthma attacks every night, I didn't sleep at all and I was so weak that I couldn't work. My mental state was no better: I became gloomy and irritable; the slightest trouble seemed to me like a heavy grief. I tried a number of different treatments to no avail. In Switzerland, medium horns were cut out of my nose. But I didn't feel the slightest relief. In November 1918, my condition, as a result of the terrible misfortune that befell me, deteriorated even further. While my husband, a naval officer, was with his cruiser in Corfu, the flu took away our only son, a charming ten-year-old boy, in six days. Lonely and helpless, I bitterly reproached myself for not being able to guard and preserve our precious treasure. I wanted to go crazy, to die.

When my husband returned (this was already in February), he forced me to go to a new doctor, who prescribed me various medications and advised me to undergo a course of treatment in Mont-Dore. I spent the whole of August there. Upon arrival back, the asthma attacks resumed again, and with utter despair I had to admit that I was getting worse and worse “in every way.”

It was then that I had the pleasure of meeting you. Frankly speaking, I attended your talks in October without much hope. But now I am happy, having the opportunity to tell you that by the end of November I had completely recovered. Insomnia, suffocation, depressed state of mind somehow disappeared. I feel strong and energetic. Along with physical healing, I also found spiritual healing and I can safely say that if my mother’s heart had not suffered from an incurable wound, then I would have had nothing more to desire.

Why didn't I recognize you earlier? My child would have a cheerful, vigorous mother.

Thank you, Mr. Coue, thank you a thousand times.

Please accept my sincere gratitude.

I can now once again continue the struggle that I have been waging for 30 years and which completely absorbs me...

In your person last August I found an invaluable support sent to me by Providence. Sick, with a painful premonition, I went for several days to our dear Lorraine: I was frightened by the stunning spectacle of terrible grief and destruction... and yet I returned from there with new strength, encouraged and strengthened... It seemed to me that I had no what is the support - unfortunately, I’m not religious... I looked around, looking for support and help. Then, by chance, I met you at my cousin’s. And you, precisely you, gave me the support that I was looking for.

I'm in a completely different mood these days; I inspire my subconscious to restore my physical well-being. And I have no doubt that very soon I will be as healthy as I was before. Even now I notice a significant improvement. You will easily understand my feeling of gratitude if I tell you that due to diabetes, with complications in the kidneys, I had several attacks of glaucoma. Now my eyes have recovered (the patient’s vision is now almost completely restored) and general state my health has improved significantly.

I defended my dissertation with great success and received not only maximum distinction, but also congratulations from the committee. A significant share of these “honors” belongs to you - I will never forget this. I am very sorry that you were not present at the dissertation defense. Your name was mentioned with great sympathy in the testing commission, which consisted of extremely respected scientists. You can be sure that now your theory has wide access to the university. Of course, there is no need to thank me; I am much more indebted to you than you are to me. C. Baudouin (Professor at the Institute J. J. Rousseau in Geneva)

I welcome your efforts and am convinced that you will be able to direct the consciousness of a very large number of people towards an expedient and reasonable path.

What could you think about me? Why did I forget you? Oh, no, believe me: I have boundless gratitude to you; Your instructions are having more and more effect on me. I use self-hypnosis every day and every day I achieve more and more successful results. I bless your name every day because your method is the real truth. Thanks to him, I gain more and more power over myself every day; Every day I move more and more confidently along the path you indicated and feel that I am really getting better. You would hardly recognize in a lively, vigorous woman, despite her sixty years of age, that unfortunate person who was constantly sick and who found his good health only thanks to you and your method. May the Lord bless you: there is no greater good than showing kindness to your neighbors. You bring a lot of good, - for my part, I do what I can and thank the Almighty.

Your brochure and your lecture interested us extremely. For the benefit of all mankind, it would be extremely desirable that the work be translated into various languages. It must penetrate into all countries, to all peoples and bring benefit to the greatest possible number of those unfortunate people who suffer from the misuse of this omnipotent (and at the same time, as it were, divine) power, which, according to your convincing and brilliant presentation, constitutes the true elementary ability of man : the power of his imagination. I have read many scientific works devoted to the human will, and I have also accumulated a large arsenal of all kinds of formulas, thoughts, aphorisms, etc. Your presentation, however, completely exhausts the question. I doubt that anyone else has been able to concentrate thoughts on “trusting yourself” as skillfully and expediently as you did in your healing formulas.

As you already know, I came here from East Africa due to a severe nervous illness. In addition, I had an ulcer behind my ear; Despite visiting several doctors, one of whom treated me with electricity, the ulcer persisted for twenty-five years.

I've only been here for five weeks. During this short time, I not only benefited greatly from your method in relation to my nervous disease, but my ulcer was almost completely healed. If healing continues in the same way, it will soon disappear completely.

I feel great joy that I can sincerely and warmly thank you for the great benefit brought to me by those precious minutes that you so kindly devoted to me last Saturday.

After my visit to you on Saturday, the pain completely disappeared, and with it my nervous state. I feel like a different person. My appreciation and gratitude to you are endless.

I do not want you to leave our country, where your name is now so famous, without hearing words of gratitude from one of those many whom you have helped: I, too, “become better and better every day in all respects.” As you know, we doctors are extremely slow to accept new discoveries, but once a method finds our approval, we subject it to careful study. The sight of your audience, where every day the sick regained health, good spirits and cheerfulness, was a positive revelation for me. I was especially impressed by your treatment of a stutterer, which I myself had been treating for several months to no avail. I was amazed when, by some miracle, they began to speak completely clearly and, moreover, without the slightest strain. This healing was by no means fleeting: assuming the possibility of a relapse, I found them after your departure: they still spoke excellently.

Let me thank you again. I hope that God will give you a long life and that you will come to us again soon.

I am sincerely grateful to you for permission to attend your interesting self-hypnosis session last Monday - more interesting, perhaps, especially for a doctor who so often has to observe how the patient’s unconscious sphere counteracts his instructions. I hasten to thank you for the great benefit that your book brought me. I had a severe nervous condition, which resulted in acute neurasthenia. I completely lost the ability to control my actions. Currently I am quite healthy, cheerful, cheerful and optimistic.

Upon returning from Nancy, my daughter felt much better. Nevertheless, some traces of the disease still made themselves felt from time to time. With each of these relapses, the daughter tried to pull herself together and said: “My subconscious is behaving badly again, but it’s okay, it will pass.”

And indeed, the improvement progresses, noticeably and lastingly. It's been a month since my daughter became exactly the same as before. We go to our friends without the slightest fear; she visits the dentist, where she often has to wait a long time, but she takes it very calmly, since she has unshakable faith in your brilliant method. It has been of great benefit to my wife and me.

For three years I suffered from terrible attacks of asthma, which recurred almost every month and forced me to stay in bed for two weeks. During these days I was positively unable to move without experiencing the greatest suffering. My last seizure was last September. After which I was left with shortness of breath - although not so severe, but continuous and therefore especially painful. I sometimes remembered with regret the acute attacks, after which there was at least a few days break. The slightest food increased the difficulty in breathing, and I felt sad that I could not live like everyone else around me. I spent more than four months in this state when I heard about your method in mid-January. After several days of hesitation and doubt, I told myself that since others were recovering from the same illness, there was no reason why I should not recover too. With great diligence and faith, I began to say twenty times in the morning and evening: “Every day I am getting better and better in all respects.” And even during the day, no matter what I did, I often said to myself: “I’m better, I’m better, etc.”

Before ten days had passed since I started using your method, a significant improvement began to be noticeable in my breathing. I began to breathe much more freely.

I continued to apply the method with even more diligence and faith than before. During January I became continuously better; no relapse was ever observed. Now I am almost completely recovered. Only occasionally, when going up a mountain or up a flight of stairs, do I still feel a slight shortness of breath, but I firmly hope that I will be able to gradually eliminate these last sad memories of the illness.

I have returned to a normal life, I can go everywhere, without any difficulty I take walks in the surrounding area of ten or fifteen kilometers, I take part in all the parties with my relatives and friends and travel anywhere, in a word, I do freely everything that I was completely incapable of doing at home. for almost four years. It seems to me that I have started a new life.

In the spring of 1916, in the trenches at Loss, I was wounded in the left side of my head by a grenade fragment; As a result, I became paralyzed on almost the entire right side of my body. I lost the ability to move my right leg and arm. His sense of taste and smell were greatly diminished, and his weight dropped to 98 pounds. My memory weakened, I spoke with the greatest difficulty. Over the next six years I was treated in various hospitals, but the paralysis did not respond to massage, baths, or treatment with electricity, heat and light. However, during this time I gained weight to 126 pounds. In November 1921, I read Charles Baudouin's book on self-hypnosis and was completely captivated by the teachings of the Nancy school. My wife took me to Nancy in a moving chair, my usual mode of transportation: I could only walk the most insignificant distance with the help of a stick and dragging my leg; my right hand was in a bandage all the time. On my first visit, Mr. Coue told me that if my healing was possible, it would be very slow. Although he did not tell me directly, there is no doubt that he himself doubted that I would be cured. He advised my wife to give me suggestions at night while I was sleeping. Soon my appetite returned and my digestion was restored. After being wounded, I ate very little and was very nervous. I started sleeping eight hours a night, whereas in hospitals I slept on average no more than two. In the first three months my weight increased by almost 28 pounds. Taste and smell gradually returned, and my wife began to notice that at night I made slight movements with my fingers and toes. It was only in November 1922 that the first noticeable signs of easing paralysis appeared. I started lifting my leg, wiggling my fingers and moving my arm.

Every day the improvement became more and more noticeable, and at present I feel quite healthy. I am incredibly happy that I managed to regain my health where I lost it, in France and at the same time - again - with the assistance of a Frenchman.

I arrived in Nancy last October and attended about ten sessions. I suffered from extreme general weakness, and for some time from acute anemia. My state of mind was so depressed and indifferent that I did not even think about recovery. However, I started using your method. I must confess that at the beginning I did not feel any noticeable improvement. However, after two months my condition completely unexpectedly changed, and from that moment the improvement progressed, although slowly, but continuously. My neurasthenia disappeared without a trace, and with it the terrible weakness that turned my life into complete torture. Now I’m thirty-two years old, and I can safely say that I haven’t felt this good since I was fifteen. My mental state has improved significantly. There is no longer any bitterness or fruitless internal struggle in me. I clearly see that your method is the surest means leading directly to the goal.

The old conflict between imagination and will no longer exists in me; both principles are harmoniously directed in the same direction. I never imagined that I could experience this kind of upliftment.

I bless this day: the improvement in my condition was immediate. I have been using your method for five months now: now I am almost completely healthy and feel that life is still worth living. I took a month off to attend your sessions in Nancy. My digestion was completely upset and, in addition, I had a serious nervous condition. From the very beginning there was a significant improvement, thanks to which I extremely carelessly abandoned my entire diet and, as a result, experienced new pain in the stomach and intestines. At this time I was just about to leave Nancy, and you advised me to attend Madame Villeneuve’s sessions on Wednesdays. I continued to use self-hypnosis and am now completely freed from inflammation of the intestines and stomach pain that lasted fifteen or eighteen years. My nervous state is also somewhat better, and despite the usual abundance of work at the end of the year, I feel as I have not felt for many years. I told about your method to people who are able to understand its essence. With great enthusiasm, I reported him to one of my brothers, a doctor, who treated him with great skepticism, probably because he did not know him at all or was not well acquainted with him. He was extremely amazed at the results I had achieved, since he had been observing my serious illness for several years, took x-rays of me and knew perfectly well the defects of my body.

E. Sh. (Paris)

***

For me personally, the science of self-hypnosis - in my opinion, this is precisely about science- brought great benefits. But, frankly speaking: if I continue to study it with undiminished interest, it will be mainly because I see in it the most excellent means for revealing true love for one’s neighbor.

When in 1915 I first attended M. Coue’s session, I must admit that I treated his words with the greatest distrust.

However, the facts that I hundreds Once I saw it with my own eyes, they forced me to abandon skepticism and admit that self-hypnosis always has a beneficial effect - to varying degrees, however - on organic diseases. The rare cases in which I have seen unsuccessful results have been nervous diseases, neurasthenia and imaginary illnesses.

I have nothing to tell you that Mr. Coue, like you yourself - and maybe even more often than you, always repeats: “I don’t perform miracles, I don’t heal anyone, I only teach people how they can heal themselves.” . I must admit that in this regard I am still somewhat skeptical: after all, if Mr. Coue does not heal, then he, in any case, helps the healing tremendously, instilling new vital energy in the sick, teaching them not to lose heart, lifting them up and pointing them out. they are on the way... to those spiritual heights, about which most people, immersed in rough everyday life, have not the slightest idea.

The more I understand the essence of beneficial self-hypnosis, the clearer the meaning of the divine law of love that Christ bequeathed to us becomes: “Love your neighbor” - give him part of your heart and your moral strength, help him rise if he has fallen, and heal if he is sick. This is truly the “divine gift” that Jesus spoke about to the Samaritan woman. This is precisely, from the point of view of Christianity, the value of beneficent self-hypnosis, which seems to me to be a good and saving science, which gives us the opportunity to more clearly understand that we are all endowed with an unknown power that can - if used correctly - contribute to our spiritual rebirth and physical healing .

Those who still do not know at all or are little acquainted with your science should generally refrain from judgment until they see for themselves what results it achieves and what benefits it brings.

Please accept the assurances of my unfailing devotion.

Thoughts and sayings of Emile Coue

Man is like a swimming pool with two taps, one above and one below. The pool is filled through the overhead tap. The bottom tap is larger in diameter than the top: when it is closed, the pool is full; when is it open - swimming pool empties.

What happens if you open both taps at the same time? Naturally, the pool will always be empty. What happens if the bottom tap is kept closed all the time? The pool will gradually fill, and then the same amount of water will overflow over the edge as will flow into the pool.

Let every person keep the lower tap shut, let him not waste his strength in vain, let him do once what it is enough to do once, and not twenty or forty times, as many others do, let him never rush or be in a hurry, and let him always remembers how easily every business from the minute when it becomes possible for us. If we act this way, the reservoir of our strength will always be full, and we still don’t need the excess that overflows to satisfy our needs.

You should not have confidence in me, but in yourself. For only in you is the power that will heal you. My role is only to teach you how to use this power.

***

For things that seem extraordinary to us, the reason is always the simplest. And if they seem unusual to you, it is only because you do not know the reason. As soon as it becomes clear to you, everything immediately appears in the simplest light.

***

Reality appears to us not as it really is, but as it seems to us. This explains the contradictions in the testimony of several completely conscientious witnesses.

***

In the conflict between will and imagination, imagination always wins. In these frequent cases, we not only do not do what we want, but - alas - we do what we do not want.

Examples: the more we want to fall asleep, the more we want to remember a person’s name, the more we want to refrain from laughing, the more we want to avoid obstacles, thinking at the same time that we cannot do this,- the further we are from sleep, the more difficult it is for us to remember the name, the louder our laughter and the more inevitable the obstacle.

The most important human ability is imagination, not will. Therefore, it is a gross mistake to advise people to cultivate the will; they, first of all, must develop and educate the imagination.

***

Confidence that you are in control of your thoughts gives you the ability to truly lead them.

***

Each of our thoughts - no matter whether good or bad - is fulfilled, realized, becomes reality - of course, within the limits of the possible.

***

He who rushes into life with the thought: “I will achieve,” always achieves without fail, since he does everything to achieve. He takes advantage of the slightest opportunity, clings to the most insignificant opportunity and very often - consciously or unconsciously - creates a pleasant environment for himself.

Whoever is against it, always doubts himself, will never achieve anything. There may be thousands of favorable opportunities around him, but he does not notice them and does not take advantage of them, although it is enough for him to stretch out his hand. Never complain about fate - everything depends on you.

***

Everything we have is the work of our own hands, and not at all a gift from fate.

***

If the task before you is possible, always think that it is very easy to complete. Then you will spend exactly as much energy as is actually necessary. If the task seems difficult to you, it will require ten, twenty times more strength for its implementation. In other words, you will be completely wasting your energy.

***

Self-hypnosis is a tool that, like any other, you need to learn to use. The best gun in inexperienced hands turns out to be worthless, but as soon as those same hands acquire the necessary skill, the bullets immediately begin to hit the target.

***

Conscious self-hypnosis, performed in good faith, sincerely and patiently, is carried out with mathematical precision - of course, within the limits of what is objectively possible.

***

If some people do not achieve satisfactory results with the help of self-hypnosis, it is only because they do not have sufficient confidence in success or because they - what is much more often - spend effort on it.

To achieve a favorable suggestion, you should not make any the slightest tension. The latter is necessary for the development of the will, whereas in this case the will must be left aside. We're dealing here exclusively with imagination.

***

All treatment methods used by various types of healers come down to self-hypnosis. Whatever they are - be it words, conspiracy, passes, etc. - all of them have only the goal of inducing self-hypnosis in patients for recovery.

***

Many people who have been unsuccessfully treated all their lives imagine that suggestion will heal them instantly. This is mistake; You shouldn't think that way. One cannot demand from suggestion more than what it can give under normal conditions: it causes a gradual improvement, which little by little turns into a complete recovery, if such a thing is possible at all.

***

No disease is single; there are always two diseases (except perhaps in cases of exclusively mental illness). Indeed: with every physical illness there is certainly a mental one. If we denote a physical illness by a coefficient of 1, then the mental coefficient will be 1, 2, 10, 20, 50, 100 and more. In most cases, mental illness disappears immediately, and if its coefficient was very high, for example, 100, and the coefficient of physical illness was 1, then as a result only the latter, or more precisely, one hundred and one of the general illness remains. This often seems like a miracle, but in reality there is nothing miraculous about it.

***

Contrary to popular belief, physical illnesses are much easier to treat than mental illnesses...

***

Confidence is necessary equally for both the one who makes the suggestion and the one to whom it is made. Only this confidence makes it possible to achieve favorable results where all other means have failed.

***

Buffon said: "Man is style." We affirm: “A man is what he thinks.” Fear of failure almost always causes the collapse of an enterprise, while the thought of success leads directly to the desired goal: all obstacles encountered along the way are eliminated extremely easily.

***

Contrary to popular belief, suggestion or self-hypnosis can also heal organic diseases.

***

The effect is not exerted by the person making the suggestion, but by the “method”.

***

Suggestion is much stronger if we do it to ourselves than if we receive it from the outside.

***

One should never forget the basic principle of self-hypnosis: constant confidence in success even when the first attempts end in failure.

Rene de Brabois

***

It is often thought that hypnotism can only be used to treat nervous diseases. This is not true. Its field of action is much wider. And indeed: hypnotism acts through the nervous system, while the latter dominates the entire organism. Muscles are moved by nerves; Nerves direct blood circulation by directly influencing the heart and blood vessels, which they cause to contract or dilate. Nerves control the entire body, and through mediation it is possible to influence all diseased organs. (Dr. Paul Jouard, Chairman of the International Society for the Study of Psychical Phenomena)

***

As a therapeutic technique, mental influence plays a very significant role. This is a factor of paramount importance, which it would be extremely wrong to neglect. In medicine, as in general in all branches of human activity, the guiding importance is moral forces.

(Dr. Louis Renon, professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris)

***

Suggestion based on faith is a huge force.

(Dr. A.L., Paris)

***

In order to nourish yourself and instill in others an unshakable faith, you must always be convinced of your sincerity; and in order to gain this sincerity and this conviction, you must put yourself above your interests the good of one's neighbor.

(C. Baudouin. “The power is within us”)

(Recorded by E. Coue Emilia Leon)

The rules that should be followed when achieving favorable self-hypnosis in patients are very brief, but completely sufficient if they are followed exactly: it is necessary sure in yourself and manifest it in the tone of your voice, apply the most simple techniques and expressions being at the same time very persistent and pretend that you have power over the patient.

***

My general suggestion, pronounced in a monotonous voice, induces a slight drowsy state in patients, allowing words to more easily penetrate their unconscious self.

***

Try to create in the patient a feeling of friendly communication and complete trust in you; he will then love conversations with you and give you all the attention that you so need. By creating a mental predisposition in him that will make him feel good, and by proving to him your sincere friendship, you will then easily achieve successful results.

***

Tell yourself that whatever you want to do, you are capable of doing - and not only superficially, but also perfectly - provided, of course, if your intentions are at all reasonable.

If you notice someone’s cold or hostile gaze or feel that someone doesn’t like you, this will not bother you at all and will not force you to change your usual manner of treating people; on the contrary, it will double, triple your efforts, inspire you and you will say to yourself: “this person doesn’t like me now, but I will attract his sympathy, he will like me.”

***

We know from history that many martyrs died with a smile on their lips. This means that, despite the most terrible torment, they did not experience suffering. In their imagination there was an idea of the reward awaiting them in heaven: anticipating the heavenly joys that befell them, they felt nothing other than this.

***

I never say I don’t allow unnecessary words, so that they can be told to me. You are a neurasthenic: I know better than you yourself what is wrong with you, and I know that you are suffering (the patient is happy when he is told that he is suffering), we will try to cure you better.

***

Instill confidence in yourself that you must achieve the desired result, and you will find the right ways to achieve it; the most interesting thing is that you don’t even have to search their. If you consider it yours debt bring these young people to me for a session, then you can easily find words to persuade them to do this or even to arouse their desire.

***

The further I go, the more I am convinced that I shouldn’t even strain my attention. The shorter and simpler the suggestion, the better it is. You don't need to make any special suggestions to yourself. The formula: “every day I feel better and better in all respects” embraces absolutely everything.

One person, despite intensive treatment, did not straighten his arm for two years. Dr. X. instantly made him straighten his arm, instilling in him only one thought: "I can".

***

No matter how sick the person in front of you is, you must do something for him and at the same time be sure that you will actually do something.

***

You should never show pity for a patient. They will tell me: You are cruel! But I am doing this in your own interests - I will harm you if I pity you.

***

When a person wants to do something, but imagines that he is incapable of doing it, he will definitely do something exactly the opposite of what he wanted.

Dizziness is the most striking example of the correctness of my statement. A man walks along a narrow path along an abyss and does not think about anything at first; suddenly the thought occurs to him that he can rush into the abyss. If, unfortunately, he still looks down at the same time, then he will certainly perish; the idea of falling has already formed in his mind, he is pulled there by some invisible force, which increases even more from his efforts to hold on - in the end, he gives in to it and falls into the abyss. This explains most of the disasters when climbing mountains.

What happens in our physical sphere is also observed in our psyche. Harmful thoughts-also a kind of abyss that causes the fall of one who does not know how to hold on.

***

The influence of the psyche on the body is undeniable. I maintain that it is infinitely more powerful than is commonly believed. It's huge and perfect immeasurable. We know that it sometimes causes contractures and paralysis, which in essence should be transient, but which, nevertheless, can last a lifetime unless some new circumstances change the patient’s mental state again.

A clear example is one woman from Paris, who lay in bed for eleven years: thanks to my suggestion, she got up, began to walk and even run.

***

I am not saying at all that our will is not strength. On the contrary, it is a huge force. But she almost always turns against us. But if you tell yourself: “I want this and I can do it” and do not use special effort, then you will definitely achieve the desired result.

***

You are creating your own symptoms, in your opinion, the disease you imagine attribute.

Tell your illness: “I was in your power, but I will no longer be in your power.”

***

Parents can easily eliminate unwanted tendencies in their children and replace them with the opposite. To do this, it is enough to repeat to them 20-25 times during sleep what it is desirable to evoke in them. Mothers and fathers should look at this as a duty towards their children. They need this spiritual food just as much as physical food. And you also need to take care of her.

***

Praise has a good effect, but only when it is not exaggerated. Has a beneficial effect

and reproach, but it can also paralyze our motives. I use figures of speech that are not capable of offending anyone; I try to subtly weave reproach into them. This form of address does not repel anyone: people do not feel that I am reproaching them. You can blame yourself; when you hear a reproach from another, it irritates you. I don't blame. I'm just stating the facts.

***

Repeat morning and evening: Every day I feel better and better in every way. This formula is the same for everyone. It is simple and easy - too easy, isn't it? But at the same time very important. If you think that you are sick, then you really are get sick; If you think that you are recovering, then you will certainly you will get better.

The reason for your recovery will not be hope, but firm confidence.

11/27/1917. Since yesterday I have crossed my seventh decade and am safely entering my eighth. But unless some stray bullet or bomb hits me, I will calmly continue on my way without feeling the burden of years.

I have infused this thought into myself, and it will become a reality for me.

At the “sessions” with Emile Coue

Essay by Emilia Leon

The whole city is full of his name. People from all walks of life flock to him. Everyone gets the same welcome. And this hospitality alone is of great importance to many. But what’s most exciting, of course, is when you watch how people who came to the session with gloomy, pain-distorted, and sometimes hostile faces (they are suffering!) go home completely different, cheerful, vigorous, very often beaming with joy ( they stopped suffering!). With his good nature, which in some mysterious way unique to him combines a friendly smile and great seriousness, Coue seems to firmly hold the hearts of all his patients in his hands. He walks around the rows of numerous visitors to the sessions and addresses each one: “Well, madam, what do you want to complain about?..”

***

Ah, you rack your brains too much over the causes of your illness. What do you care why and why you suffer? You are in pain - that is absolutely enough... I will teach you how to prevent this from happening...

***

Is your ulcer gradually healing? Great, great. Well, you know, for the two times that I had you, it was a great success. Congratulations from the bottom of my heart.

Continue diligently with self-hypnosis - you will see that you will soon be completely healthy. For ten years, you say, you have had this ulcer? What's special here? Even if it takes twenty years, it will still heal now.

***

Have you noticed any improvement yet? Do you know why? Simply because we don't have enough faith in ourselves. When I tell you that you are better, you are getting better, right? Why is this? Yes, because you believe in me. Believe as much as you should in yourself and you will achieve the same results.

***

Please, madam, there is no need for all these details. You want to tell me about all your ailments and by doing so you create them in yourself. We would have to make a long list of your illnesses. In the end, you only have bad nerves. Imagine that you are on the road to recovery. I'll teach you how to do it. This is sheer nonsense...

***

You say you have nervous attacks every week? So: from today you will do what I tell you, and there will be no seizures.

***

Have you suffered from constipation all your life? For forty years? I believe you. But this doesn’t prove anything: you might as well get rid of them tomorrow. Do you hear, tomorrow? Under this condition, of course, that you do exactly everything I tell you...

***

Do you have glaucoma, madam? I can’t promise you a complete recovery; I’m not entirely sure of that myself. But this does not mean that your disease is incurable. To me

managed to achieve excellent results with one lady from Chalonan Saone and another from Toul...

***

Well, madam, since since you arrived here you have not had a single nervous attack, and before you had them every day, it means you are healthy. But still, show yourself to me a few more times, I want your health to improve...

***

Choking will go away along with internal damage. And they will disappear when your digestion is restored. Everything will happen in due time, you just need to do everything consistently. With suffocation the situation is the same as with pain in the heart; it usually goes away very quickly...

***

The suggestion does not in the least prevent you from continuing your usual treatment... As for the spot on the eye, it gradually goes away: every day it becomes smaller and more transparent...

***

To the child (persistently and intelligibly): Close your eyes, I won’t explain to you what and how - you still won’t understand. Does your chest hurt? Now it will pass... And you won't cough anymore...

(Explanation): It is interesting to note that in chronic bronchitis relief is immediate and painful symptoms disappear extremely quickly...

Children are generally very easy and obedient objects of treatment: their bodies are almost always immediately suggestible.

***

To a patient who complains of fatigue: “Frankly speaking, there are days when I, too, get tired of seeing patients, but I still see them, and at the same time they are whole.”

days. Don't tell yourself: "I can't handle this." You can always overcome yourself."

(Explanation): The idea of fatigue inevitably causes a feeling of weariness, while the idea of having to do something always gives us the strength needed to complete the task before us. The psyche can and should rule over the animal nature.

***

Whatever the reason that prevents you from walking, now it disappears more and more every day. You know the proverb: “Trust in God, but don’t make a mistake yourself”? Well, here it is: get up two or three times a day, lean on someone and say to yourself, not like now: “I have weakness in the lower back, I can’t,” but on the contrary: “I can, I can.” ..

***

After the formula: “Every day I feel better and better in every way,” add also: “The people who persecuted me, can not persecute me no more, they don’t persecute me anymore...

***

You see, I told you the absolute truth: all you had to do was think that nothing was hurting you, and the pain immediately went away. And now you should not think that it can happen again, otherwise you will feel it again...

***

Everything we imagine becomes reality for us. Therefore, you should never imagine anything bad.

Think: “My illness is passing,”-just like during the experiments you thought: “I can’t unclench my hands”!

The more you think: "I don't want",- the more inevitably you achieve just the opposite. You need to tell yourself: “it will be so” and think hard about it. Clench your fist and think: “I can’t unclench my fingers,” try to unclench (the patient cannot) - well, you see what an insignificant role your will plays.

(Explanation): This is the important basis of the entire method. When suggesting, it is necessary to completely exclude will and contact only imagination, in order to avoid conflict between them, in which the will is always defeated.

***

Increasing your reserve of strength while the years pass is, although paradoxical, quite possible.

***

Diabetics: Continue your usual treatment. Although I will use suggestion on you, I cannot firmly promise to cure you.

(Explanation): In many cases I have seen complete cures of diabetes through suggestion. The most remarkable thing is that it was possible to note a gradual decrease in protein in the urine and even its complete disappearance.

***

Want and desire- far from the same thing.

***

Following this, Coue asks the patients to close their eyes and addresses them with the general brief suggestion given above in his essay. Then he goes around the rows of patients again and with a few words touches on the special case of each:

To the first: “Are you complaining of pain? Listen to me: the cause that causes them - no matter whether it is gout or anything else - will be eliminated more and more from today. Your unconscious self will take care of this. And once the cause is eliminated, then the pain will disappear little by little, until only a faint memory of it remains.”

To the second:“Your stomach is not working well, it is slightly dilated. I have already told you that your digestion will now gradually improve. I will also add that little by little the dilation of the stomach will disappear. Your body will return to the stomach the functionality and elasticity it has lost. The stomach will gradually take its previous shape and with increasing ease perform those movements that are necessary to transport the food it contains into the intestines. At the same time, the pouch formed as a result of the expansion of the stomach will shrink more and more, food will no longer stagnate in it, and as a result, fermentation processes will completely disappear.”

To the third: “To you, madam, I will tell you that whatever the causes of your liver disease, your body will cope with it: Every day they will be eliminated more and more. And along with this, those painful phenomena that cause you suffering will decrease and, in the end, completely disappear. Your liver will function more and more normally day by day, will again secrete alkali, and not acids, in the right consistency and in the right quantity, and will promote proper digestion.”

To the fourth: “My child, do you understand me? Every time you think that you will have a seizure, you will immediately hear my voice, and it will tell you: “No, no, my friend, you will not have any seizure” - and everything will pass right away, so you You won’t even notice anything...”

To the fifth: “I have already told you and I repeat again that your varicose ulcers should heal. From today, at the bottom of this ulcer, a whole series of fleshy tubercles located next to each other are formed, which gradually grow and fill the ulcer cavity. At the same time, the edges of the ulcer will grow, both in height and width. Finally, a moment will come when these edges come together, and between them there will only be an opening in the form of a point or a small line; then this hole will heal and the ulcer will finally heal.”

To the sixth: “Are you saying that you have a hernia? It can, it must pass through you. Your unconscious self will take care of this so that the tear in your peritoneum will gradually heal. The wound will get smaller every day, and eventually it will heal completely and your hernia will disappear.”

To the seventh: “As for your glaucoma (maybe you have cataracts or some other eye disease), I tell you that from today your disease will go away gradually. At the same time, you will feel how your vision is gradually being restored, you will see everything better, further, clearer and more clearly...”

To the eighth: “You say you have eczema? This illness should go away quickly, very quickly, do you hear? The cause that causes it will now gradually be eliminated. And naturally: once the cause passes, the disease will simultaneously disappear. If you now experience pain, itching and heat in the affected parts of the body, then these symptoms will be felt less and less every day; the discharge will disappear along with it. And finally, as the diseased skin peels off and disappears in the form of scales, its place will be taken by another, fresh, elastic and normal color...”

Ninth: Wandering bud. The explanation is similar to that for uterine prolapse: the stretched ligaments will gradually return to normal length.

Tenth: Inflammation of the intestines. “The inflammation gradually goes away, the mucous discharge decreases, until one day it disappears completely and a complete recovery occurs.”

Eleventh: Anemia. - “The amount of blood increases every day, the blood becomes more and more red and looks like the blood of completely healthy people. The anemia gradually disappears, and along with it the dejected state of mind that accompanies it.”

To the twelfth: “Whenever you feel pain, start immediately say: “It passes, it passes, it passes...”, but quickly, very quickly, as soon as you can. You must learn to use self-hypnosis; when you have done a few exercises, you will no longer need me. Unless, of course, you imagine that you need me..."

To the thirteenth: “Your experiments are going very well. If you are still awake, it is because you are making an effort to fall asleep. It’s enough to quietly mutter to yourself: “I’m falling asleep, I’m falling asleep...” If this method does not give results, then it means you are not following my instructions exactly.”

To the fourteenth: “All sorts of periodically recurring seizures are caused by by ourselves. There were times when all the women suffered from fits of hysteria. Following the example of their friends or relatives, they convinced themselves that they were hysterical.”

To Fifteen: Saying, “Oh, if only I didn’t have a migraine,” is the same as saying, “I’ll have a migraine.”

To the sixteenth: “You suffer from constipation because you think that your stomach is not working; think just the opposite and you will achieve the results you want.”

To the seventeenth: “All your unfounded fears should disappear without a trace. You alone are the key to complete healing. Drive away all fearful thoughts from yourself, throw them away from you, just like shaking crumbs off a tablecloth. No person in the world can influence you unless you allow him to.

Next time you won't tell me that you're not better: you should be better. And never strain your will, do not use the words: “I want.” I forbid you this (if at all I have the right to forbid you).”

Eighteenth: If you have a broken bone, go to the hospital now. Suggestion will not help you; it only affects internal organs, muscles, etc.”

To the nineteenth: “Are you continuing to diet?”

"I don't like milk."

"Imagine imagine that you are him love."

To the twentieth: (Third visit). Be absolutely sure that your itching will not happen again. If you are afraid of it, of course you will feel it again. But even if you feel completely well, still show yourself to me from time to time: I will make sure that your health is completely strengthened.”

Twenty-one: Patient: “Is it possible to force yourself to think?”

Coue: “If you want to follow my method, you don’t have to force yourself at all. Everything should go by itself.”

Twenty-two: Patient: “I can’t say “I can” when I think I can’t.”

Coue: “Do what I tell you. After all, I’m teaching you, not you teaching me.”

To the twenty-third: “You have bronchitis and you suck on Wald tablets to stop coughing. Wonderful. Meanwhile, suggestion will eliminate the cause of your illness.”

To the twenty-fourth: “Have you consulted a doctor about your illness? Follow his instructions exactly. Yes, yes, madam, you need to simultaneously follow the doctor’s orders and apply suggestion - one does not interfere with the other, - vice versa".

To the twenty-fifth: “I am not a healer. I’m just a person who teaches you what you need to do in order to get well.”

To the twenty-sixth: “Whatever the cause of the headaches from which you suffer so much, your body will make it gradually disappear. And as the cause is eliminated, you will notice that migraines become less and less frequent, and the pain becomes weaker at the worst, until one day they disappear completely.

“Now you clearly feel how every time my hand touches your forehead, it seems to take away a piece of your pain with it. And in a minute, when you open your eyes, you will feel that the pain has completely gone away.”

To the twenty-seventh: “I feel completely out of breath, especially in hot weather.”

Coue: “Have you seen a doctor?”

Patient: “To ten doctors. They all said: “You’re nervous,” but I still didn’t feel any better.”

Coue: “Yes, it’s nerve-wracking, but we’ll help you get rid of it.”

Having thus gone around all his listeners in turn, Coue asks them to open their eyes again and adds: “You have heard all my advice and instructions. To put them into practice, you must do the following: Throughout your life, every morning before you get up, and every evening before you go to bed, close your eyes and repeat twenty times in a row. aloud(or at least moving your lips, this is absolutely necessary), counting down mechanically on a twine with twenty knots, the following formula:

“Every day I feel better and better in every way.”

Do not think about anything specific - the words “in all respects” apply to absolutely everything. Make this self-hypnosis with confidence, with a firm conviction that you will achieve what you want. And the stronger your confidence, the more favorable your success will be.

If during the day or night you experience unexpected physical pain or mental suffering, then tell yourself with confidence that you do not want to consciously increase them, but want to get rid of them. After this, try to be alone, close your eyes and, running your hand over your forehead if you feel heavy at heart, or over a sore spot if you are suffering from physical pain, repeat out loud as loudly as possible. greater speed:“It passes, it passes, it passes...” - until it turns out to be necessary. With a known skill, mental or physical pain goes away in 20-25 seconds. If after some time you feel it again, start talking again.

Both the general above formula and this one should be pronounced with the same faith, with the same conviction and, most importantly, without any tension.”

In conclusion, Coue adds: “If before you could allow harmful self-hypnosis to come to you, because they penetrated you Unconsciously, now that you have comprehended the essence of the method, you no longer have the right to do this. If, however, you develop these self-hypnosis, then reproach only yourself: hit yourself in the chest and exclaim: “Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!” (It's my own fault, I'm to blame for everything).

***

As a grateful and enthusiastic follower of the “new method” and its creator, let me add a few more words:

If Emile Coue claims that our main internal engine is the imagination foundation his “method”, then I, for my part, believe that the body of his beautiful building is the thousands of healings he achieved, and the majestic dome is that sublime truth, which, being a benefit to people, is at the same time a tribute to reverence for the Creator: Your strength is within you... In each of you...

Everyone can adapt the “method” to their individual beliefs. It gives religious people the opportunity to remove the barriers they have unconsciously erected between them and God. And just a believer, along with doubters, freethinkers and even unbelievers, he teaches how to get rid of physical and mental suffering by simple and easy use of the miraculous method indicated by our teacher.

It's passing!..

As for those who reject the method, not knowing the secret of its power, I will ask them only a question: “Do you reject electric light because you still do not know (like, indeed, the majority of the most prominent scientists) that represents the current passing through the wire?

Oh, you don’t know yet, you cannot know that this blessed method revives us both physically and mentally.

But, whenmBy accepting him, you will get to know him...

He will help you win too!

Notes on Emile Coue's stay in Paris in October 1918 (Emilia Leon)

These notes are motivated by the desire that the instructions and advice given by Émile Coue during his stay in Paris in October 1918 become known to the wider public.

Let us leave aside this time many of those burdened with physical and mental illnesses who, under the beneficial influence of Coue, experienced relief... or were completely freed from suffering. We will focus first of all on his instructions of a more general nature.

Question: - I am familiar with your method and pronounce your formula, why don’t I achieve any results?

Answer by E. Coue: - Probably because somewhere deep down in your soul you have unconscious doubt or when self-hypnosis you use completely unnecessary efforts. Remember that effort is always dictated by will; By attracting the latter, you run the risk that your imagination will immediately rush in the opposite direction and you will achieve exactly the opposite of what you want.

Q: - What to do if you get bored with something?

A: - If you start to get bored with something, say to yourself several times: “No, no, I’m not tired of this, I’m not at all tired of it, on the contrary, I enjoy it.”

Generally speaking, it is much more advisable to convince yourself of positive side than negative.

Q: - Of course, are preparatory experiments necessary even in those cases when a kind of pride rebels against them?

A: - No, they cannot be called absolutely necessary, but they are extremely useful. Although they seem a little naive to some, they actually have a very serious meaning. They prove the following three points:

Every thought that arises in our minds becomes for us truth, prone to turn into reality.

In the conflict between will and imagination, imagination always wins; in these cases we do exactly the opposite of what we want.

We can very easily without the slightest tension, to instill in ourselves the desired thought: without any difficulty we can think sequentially - first: I can, and then: I cannot.

Preparatory experiments should not be repeated in private. A person himself is not always able to create the necessary conditions for himself, and failure can easily shake confidence in the method.

V.: - When you suffer from an illness, is it possible not to think about it?

A: - You generally have nothing to be afraid of thinking about illness. On the contrary, think about her, but only in order to say: “I love you.” not afraid".

When you enter someone else's yard and a dog rushes at you barking, look it straight in the eyes, it will not bite you; if you get scared of her and run, she will certainly grab your leg.

Q: - How to achieve what you want?

A: - Say your desires out loud more often: “I will be more confident in myself” - and your confidence will increase; “My memory is improving” - and it will get better; “I will master myself completely” - you will achieve this too.

If you say the opposite, then the opposite will happen. Everything that a person says persistently and quickly turns into reality for him (of course, if we are talking about reasonable things).

A young woman to her neighbor: “How simple it is! Not a single extra word! He is a brilliant man!”

An outstanding Parisian doctor to his colleagues: “I wholeheartedly agree with Coue’s thoughts.”

A polytechnic professor, an extremely critical person, speaks of Coue: “This is undoubtedly a great force.”

Yes, great power is the power of good. An inexorable opponent of any bad, harmful self-hypnosis, he, with tireless dedication, active readiness and a cheerful smile, extends his hand to everyone, helps to develop individuality and teaches self-healing - this is the characteristic essence of his beneficial method.

How can one not wish, therefore, that everyone would hear and assimilate the “good news” brought by Emile Coue? It awakens in every person a tremendous individual strength that can give him health and happiness.

The full development of this power transforms a person's entire life.

For those who have already succeeded in comprehending this beneficent method, marked by wonderful achievements and glorified by thousands of people, there arises a sacred duty (and at the same time great happiness) to contribute by all means at their disposal to promote its spread among those who suffer, are sick and cry. , and help them bring it into living reality for themselves.

And finally, turning our thoughts to victorious but tormented France, to its undaunted but crippled defenders, to all those incalculable physical and mental suffering that the war gave rise to, we can only fervently wish that those who have the strength for this (and “the greatest power given to man is the power to do good,” as Socrates said), we tried to make the inexhaustible source of mental and physical strength inherent in the new method the property of every nation and all of humanity as soon as possible.

Everything about everything!

Essay by Emilia Leon

If there is a great good that is intended for everyone, but - alas - is known to very few, then is it not a great and indispensable duty for the initiated to acquaint as many people as possible with it? After all, everyone can experience the innumerable benefits of the Emile Coue method.

Healing suffering is a great thing in itself. But how much more valuable is it to give suffering people the opportunity to start a truly new life.

In April, Emile Coue was in Paris. Here are some of his new instructions.

Question. One religious woman asks:

“From a religious point of view, I believe that we belittle our faith and the Creator if we make obedience to his covenants dependent on what Coue calls skill or a mechanical method: on conscious auto-suggestion.”

“From whatever point of view we look, one thing is certain: our imagination subjugates our will in all those cases when a conflict arises between them. We guide him only along the good path that our mind indicates, consciously using a mechanical method, which unconsciously often leads us down a path that is false and harmful to us.”

The interlocutor thinks and remarks:

“Yes, it’s true - conscious self-hypnosis can remove obstacles in front of us that mwe create to ourselves, but which obscure the face of God from us, just like a rag hung on a window does not allow the rays of the sun to penetrate into our room.”

Q: “How can we encourage sick people close to us to use beneficial and healing self-hypnosis? »

Q: “How can I understand to myself and others that repeating the same words, like: I fall asleep... passes... etc. - has an effect and, moreover, such a strong one that it achieves the desired effect?”

A: “The repetition of the same words evokes an idea of them, and the idea becomes truth for us and turns into living reality.”

A: “In order to master yourself, you need to think about it, and in order to think, you need to often repeat it to yourself, without, however, expending any effort.”

A: “Self-mastery applies to both the inner and outer world.”

V.: “After all, it cannot be that a person does not experience either sadness or bitterness because he does not do what he should do. It wouldn't be fair. Self-hypnosis cannot... and should not save a person from honored they suffer."

O. (E. Coue very seriously and decisively): “Of course, you are right, this should not happen... But it often happens... for a while, at least.”

Q: “Why did this patient, who has now completely recovered, always have terrible seizures?”

A: “He was waiting for these seizures, he was afraid of them. And by this they themselves called. If now he tells himself that he will no longer have seizures, then they will never happen again. But as soon as he thinks otherwise, the seizures will appear again.”

Q: “How does your method differ from others?”

A: “Mainly, the situation is that we are controlled not by the will, but by the imagination. This is the foundation on which everything else rests.”

Q: “Could you summarize your method in a few words?”

A: “In a few words, its essence boils down to the following:

Contrary to popular belief, our actions are controlled by not will, but imagination(our unconscious self). If, however, we often do what we want, it is only because we simultaneously imagine that we can do it.

If we don’t have this idea, then we do exactly the opposite of what we want. Examples: the more we, suffering from insomnia, want to fall asleep, the more excited we become; The more we try to resurrect a name that seems to have been forgotten by us, the more persistently it eludes us (it immediately comes to our minds as soon as we replace the idea “I forgot” with another “I’ll remember now”). The more we refrain from laughing, the louder the laughter becomes. The stronger the beginner is to ride a bike wants avoid obstacles, the more inevitably he rushes towards him.

We must learn to guide our imagination, which in turn guides us. Only in this way will we easily master ourselves, both our physical and mental world.

How to achieve this? Only by the practical application of conscious self-hypnosis.

Consciously, self-hypnosis is based on the principle: every thought that penetrates our consciousness becomes truth for us and strives to become a living reality.

If a person wants, then he will achieve this sooner or later if he often tells himself that this

will come to him or, on the contrary, will disappear - depending on whether we are talking about desirable or harmful, it makes no difference whether in the area of our physical or mental life.

One general formula applies to all cases: “Every day I am getting better and better in all respects.”

Q: “But is it suitable for people who are grief-stricken... or for those who are suffering from severe pain?”

A: “As long as you think, “I’m in trouble,” until then you cannot be cheerful; but in order to think about something, it is enough to imagine without the slightest tension: “I will think now about such and such.” As for physical pain, I affirm with full confidence, that no matter how strong it is, you can get rid of it.”

A hunched man enters, barely moving with the help of two sticks; there is an imprint of suffering on his face... Meanwhile, the audience is filling up. Kue follows him. He questions him and says something like this: “Have you been suffering from rheumatism for two years? Can't walk? Calm down. He won’t torment you for long now.”

Having performed preparatory experiments with the patient, Coue adds: “Close your eyes and repeat quickly, as quickly as possible, while moving your lips: passes, passes, passes... (at the same time, Coue spends 20-25 seconds along the patient’s legs). Now nothing hurts you anymore, get up and walk (the patient is walking) - faster, faster, even faster! Since you walk so easily, it means you can run - run, my sir, run!”

The patient really runs - with a joyful, transformed face - to his great amazement and to no less than all those who were present at the session of Emile Coue at the clinic of Dr. Berillon on April 27, 1920.

One visitor immediately says: “My husband suffered from asthma attacks for many years; he was literally suffocating, we constantly waited in trepidation for the end. The doctor waved his hand at him. But after one visit to Kue, he almost completely got rid of seizures.”

A young woman addresses Kue with words of warm gratitude. Her doctor, who came with her, reports that she suffered from cerebral anemia for several years; conventional treatments did not produce any results. Thanks to the use of conscious self-hypnosis, the disease, as if by some miracle, completely disappeared.

Another visitor walked with a limp after a broken leg and was in severe pain all the time. Immediately after the suggestion, his gait was restored: he no longer limped and did not feel pain.

In the crowded auditorium, the grateful voices of people who were completely healed or experienced significant relief after using the new method can be heard from everywhere.

One doctor: “The tool of healing is self-suggestion!”

An elderly gentleman, a retired member of the court, turns to the woman sitting next to him: “I literally cannot find words... this is some kind of miracle!”

Another, freed from severe suffering, notes enthusiastically: “Oh! I’m ready to thank you on my knees..."

Elderly woman: “What a joy it is to experience at my age, after all sorts of illnesses and weaknesses, a new feeling of health and vigor. Based on my own experience, I argue that all this can be given to us by the Coue method. And its results are truly lasting, truly lasting, because they are explained by the powerful force inherent in us.”

The young woman says with delight: “Kue goes straight to the goal and confidently achieves it. When healing a patient, he completely forgets about himself and attributes the merit of healing to the patient himself, to whom he puts into the hands the most reliable weapon for its further use.”

An eminent writer, who is asked to write a short essay on a beneficial method, refuses resolutely, asserting that the method is perfectly expounded by its creator: the method essentially consists of one word, which, if correctly applied, alone is capable of saving people from suffering. This word “Passing!”

Thousands of patients who have been completely or at least partially freed from suffering will confirm the words of this writer.

A lady who recovered from a serious illness adds: “No matter how much I read about Coue’s method, I am increasingly convinced that it itself is essentially much more valuable. You can’t delete a word from it and you can’t add anything to it. Our only duty is to promote its widespread dissemination. I will do everything in my power to achieve this.”

In conclusion, I would like to say the following:

With his characteristic sincerity, Emile Coue says to everyone:

“I don’t have any vibes...”

"I don't influence anyone..."

"I've never healed anyone before..."

“My students achieve the same success as me...”, etc.”

To this I want to add with complete sincerity.

Yes, all of us, students of Kue, want with the help precious method fully justify his words. And when after many - albeit very long - years, the voice of the teacher, dear to us all, will no longer be able to inspire us, - all the same, his creation - his method - will continue to help, heal and encourage many thousands of people. He must become immortal... Magnanimous France will pass it on to all humanity. The writer was right: in one thing in a simple word the truth lies. This alone is a sure and miraculous means of getting rid of severe suffering:

“It’s passing!..”

The miracle is within us

(Article in the magazine “Renaissance politique, litteraire et arartistique” dated December 18, 1920)
In gratitude to Emile Coue

In September of this year, I came across a book by Charles Bowen, a professor at the Jean-Jacques Rousseau Institute in Geneva.

The title of this book: “Suggestion and Self-Hypnosis.” The author dedicates it “with deep gratitude to Emile Coue, pioneer and friend of humanity."

It contains a simple and clear outline of a great humanitarian cause, based on a theory that may seem naive, insofar as it is understandable and accessible to every person. And everyone, having applied it in practice, will be convinced of its beneficial effect.

Emile Coue has worked tirelessly for over twenty years. He now lives in Nancy, where he once observed the work and experiments of Liébault, the founder of the theory of suggestion. For more than twenty years he has been dealing with this one issue, especially with the dissemination of the method self-hypnosis.

TO At the beginning of our century, Coue achieved the goal of his research: he discovered the enormous and inherent power of self-hypnosis. Based on countless experiments, he proved the role of the subconscious at organic diseases. This is a completely new idea, and the great merit of the humble scientist is to find a remedy for terrible diseases that were hitherto considered incurable, and against the most severe painful sensations that have never known relief.

Without the opportunity to enter into detailed scientific reasoning here, I will try to show only how the Nancy scientist practically applies his method.

As a result of many years of hard work and countless observations, Coue developed a short formula that must be repeated morning and evening.

It must be said with closed eyes, taking a position convenient for relaxing the muscles, i.e. in bed or in a chair, in a low voice, in the monotonous tone of prayer.

This magic formula is as follows:

“Every day I feel better and better in every way.”

The formula should be repeated twenty times in a row, counting on a string with twenty knots, which plays the role of a rosary. This apparent trifle is of great importance: it contributes to the mechanical pronunciation of the formula, and this is especially important.

While a man speaks these words, penetrating V subconscious, he should not think about anything specific - neither about illness, nor about worries, he should be completely passive, experiencing only the desire that he would really feel better. Words: "in every way" have a general meaning.

This desire should manifest itself without much passion, without any tension, but with firm confidence in achieving a successful result.

Using self-hypnosis, Emile Coue does not turn to the will, but exclusively to the imagination. Imagination plays a primary role; it is immeasurably more powerful than our will, to which we are accustomed to always turn.

“Be imbued with faith in yourself,” the wise teacher tells us, “be confident, firmly confident that everything is going well.” His words really come true: those who have gained faith, blind faith, strengthened by patience and endurance, actually get better and better.

Since the best proof is facts, I will allow myself to tell you what I myself experienced before meeting Coue.

I repeat once again that it was only in September of this year that I first saw Baudouin’s book. After a detailed theoretical essay, the author cites a long series of cases of healing of a wide variety of diseases: inflammation of the intestines, eczema, stuttering, aphasia, inflammation of the frontal sinus, which lasted twenty-five years and required eleven operations, inflammation of the uterus, inflammation of the ovary, various tumors, varicose veins, etc. , - especially deep tuberculous ulcers and consumption in the last stage (the case of Madame D, from Troyes, 30 years old, who became a mother after a complete recovery). These healings are in a number of cases confirmed by doctors treating patients.

These examples made a deep impression on me: before me was a real miracle. It was not about nervous diseases, but about ailments against which medicine is completely powerless. It was a complete revelation to me that even tuberculosis could be cured in this way.

For two years I had inflammation of the facial nerve and suffered unbearably in pain. Four doctors, two of them specialists, pronounced a verdict, which alone, due to its harmful influence on my psyche, could only intensify the suffering: “Nothing can be done here.” This hopelessness became for me, of course, a source of harmful self-hypnosis. Having mastered the formula: “every day... etc.”, I began to repeat it with such faith that it really seemed to be capable of moving mountains. Having taken off all the bandages and bandages, I walked around the garden with my head naked in the rain and wind and quietly repeated to myself: “I I'll be healthy the inflammation of the nerve will pass, it will pass, it will pass, it will not happen again, etc., etc.” The very next day I was healthy and since then I have never experienced this terrible illness, thanks to which I could not take a step out of the house at the slightest wind or the slightest dampness and which poisoned me all my life. I was overjoyed. Skeptics will say: what’s special here, it’s all nerves. They are right, of course, I don’t argue with them. But inspired achieved first With success, I tried to apply the method to the swelling on my left ankle, caused by a supposedly incurable kidney disease. Two days later the swelling disappeared. I then began to apply self-hypnosis to my slight fatigue, to my depressed state of mind, etc., and here too I achieved such amazing results that I had only one desire: to quickly go to Nancy and thank my savior.

I went there and got to know it an outstanding person. His simplicity and kindness are captivating. He became my friend.

I couldn't wait to see him at work soon. He invited me to his public session. I heard an endless stream of gratitude. There are no obstacles for him, he conquers all diseases: pulmonary diseases, organ displacements, Pott's disease (!), asthma, paralysis - in short, the entire enemy legion. I myself witnessed how a paralytic woman, who had just been sitting in a crooked position on a chair, stood up and walked around the room. Coue spoke to the sick and aroused faith in them, enormous, immeasurable faith in themselves. He said: “Learn to heal yourself, it is in your power if you can. I've never healed anyone before. You yourself are the key to healing, turn to your own spirit, make it serve your physical and mental well-being - it will hear you, it will heal you, you will be happy and strong. After these words, Coue approached the paralyzed woman: “Did you hear what I said? Do you believe that you will walk?” - "Yes". - “Then get up and go.” The woman got up, walked and walked around the entire garden. A miracle has happened.

One young girl who suffered from Pott's disease told me with ecstatic joy how after three sessions her spine was completely straightened, how she felt reborn again - and only recently she considered herself forever doomed...

Three women who were healed of pulmonary diseases tell in voices trembling with happiness how they returned to work and normal life. Coue, among all these people whom he treats with love, seemed to me to be some kind of being of a special order: after all, he does not take money for anything, he does all his work for free, his exceptional self-sacrifice does not want to hear about any reward. “But I owe you,” I tell him, “I owe you everything...” “Nothing, except the joyful knowledge that you will continue to be healthy...”

This simple and kind man inspires irresistible sympathy. Taking me by the arm, he went to show me his garden: he gets up very early and cultivates it himself. Being an almost absolute vegetarian, he examines the fruits of his hands with special love. And then he resumes the serious conversation again: “You have unlimited power spirit." If you learn to master it, it has a beneficial effect on our physical world. Imagination is like a horse without a bridle or reins. He is harnessed to our cart and is capable of doing all sorts of stupid things: he can carry us and kill us. But harness him properly and guide him with a true and firm hand: he will go where you want. The same is true with imagination. For our own good we must manage it. Self-hypnosis, spoken out loud, even in a quiet whisper, but certainly accompanied by movement of the lips, is an order to which the subconscious obeys; this order is carried out without our knowledge, mainly at night - evening self-hypnosis therefore plays the most significant role and gives the most favorable results.

“If you are experiencing physical pain, use on top of this the formula: “It passes, it passes...”; pronounce it very quickly, in a patter, stroking your hand on the sore spot or on the forehead, if we are talking about a difficult emotional experience.”

“This technique has an extremely beneficial effect on the psyche. Having thus called upon your subconscious for help, you can then use it in all difficult moments of life.”

In this direction, I was also able to verify from experience how beneficial the new method is.

You have now met him. But you will get to know him even better if you read the book by Baudouin that I mentioned, his brochure “The Power is Within Us” and, finally, a short book by Coue himself.

If with my lines I can awaken in the reader the desire to personally go to Nancy, then he, like me, will meet there and with all his heart will love a person who is the only one, perhaps, with his noblest kindness and true love to his neighbors brings to life the covenants of Christ.

And like me, everyone will find their physical health and mental well-being there. Life will seem more valuable and beautiful. But all this is worth the experience.

What should the upbringing of children be like?

No matter how paradoxical my thought may seem at first glance, I maintain that raising a child should begin before his birth. In fact: if a woman, having become pregnant, forms an idea about the gender of the child who is about to be born, and about those physical and mental qualities that she would like to see embodied in him, and maintains this idea in herself throughout the entire pregnancy , then she will probably give birth to a child of the appropriate sex and type.

Only strong children were born to Spartan women, who later became fearless warriors, since the greatest desire of the mothers was to give precisely such offspring to the fatherland. On the contrary, Athenian women gave birth to children with a bent towards intellectual interests: spiritual qualities significantly prevailed in them over physical ones.

A child born under such conditions extremely easily perceives good suggestions made to him and turns them into self-hypnosis, which subsequently determine the further course of his life. It should be firmly remembered that all our words and all our actions are nothing more than the result of self-suggestion, caused in most cases by the suggestion of an example or a heard word.

What should parents and mentors do to prevent the penetration of harmful self-hypnosis into children and, conversely, promote the introduction good? First of all - to be With They are always even and calm and speak, although affectionately, in a firm and decisive tone. This is the easiest way to make children obey: they will not have the desire to show any resistance.

In particular - and this is the most important thing - avoid being rude towards children: you always risk causing them to self-suggest fear associated with hatred.

Avoid also speaking ill of anyone in their presence, as you often hear in salons, where they wash the bones of close friends with the most innocent look. Children inevitably follow a bad example, and this can lead to the most tragic consequences in some cases.

Arouse in children a desire to get acquainted with natural phenomena and try to interest them with clear explanations given in a lively, entertaining tone.

Answer all their questions willingly and do not push them away with the words: “I’m tired of you, leave me alone, you’ll find out in due time.”

Whatever the reason, never tell your child: “You are lazy, you are not capable of anything, etc.” These reproaches can actually cause corresponding shortcomings in him.

If a child is lazy and doesn’t study well, try telling him, even if it’s not true: “Well, today you prepared your lesson better than ever. Try your best, my dear! Encouraged by this unusual praise, the child will undoubtedly study more diligently next time, and little by little, thanks to such reasonable encouragement, he will actually become diligent.

Under no circumstances talk about illnesses in front of children - you always risk that you will cause them to become ill. Explain to them, on the contrary, that the normal state of a person is health and that illness is an anomaly, a kind of deficiency that can be avoided by a correct and moderate life.

Do not teach children to be afraid of possible unpleasant sensations - cold, heat, rain, wind, etc. Tell them that a person can endure everything perfectly, without suffering or complaining at all.

Do not tell already fearful children about all kinds of evil spirits: Fear instilled in a child can later manifest itself in a form that is very sad for him.

Parents who do not raise their children themselves must choose for this purpose persons whom they fully trust. It is not enough for the teacher to love children - he must have exactly those qualities that you would like to develop in the child.

Awaken in children a love for work and for activities - tell them that it is not at all difficult, give them all the explanations, as I have already indicated, in an understandable and entertaining form, introduce a funny anecdotal element into them so that the child always looks forward to the next one lesson.

Instill in children the conviction that work is necessary for man, that those who do not work are of no use to anyone, that all work brings a feeling of deep and healthy satisfaction, while idleness, which seems so tempting to some, gives rise to melancholy, neurasthenia, and aversion to life. and, in the end, leads to debauchery and even crime: a person does not have the opportunity to satisfy those passions that an idle life has caused in him.

Teach children to always be polite and courteous to everyone, especially towards those whom the accident of birth has placed below them, to respect old age and not to laugh at the physical and moral shortcomings often associated with it.

Tell them that a person should love everyone equally, without distinction of origin, that he should always be ready to help someone who is in need, that he should think about others more than about himself. Only by acting in this way does a person, without even trying, gain inner satisfaction, which an egoist has been looking for all his life, but never finds it.

Instill in children self-confidence - teach them that before doing anything, a person must think everything carefully and carefully avoid hasty decisions. But then, however, having thought it over, he should no longer hesitate and deviate from decisions - unless it is proven to him that he was mistaken.

Pay special attention to the child that everyone should enter into life with a very definite idea and firm confidence in achieving the goal, that thanks to the influence of the idea, he will certainly achieve this goal. But at the same time, he should not sit idly by: no, prompted by his idea, he will simply do everything that he needs to do; he will take advantage of all opportunities or even the slightest chance, even if it is even a straw in the hands of a drowning man. And, on the contrary, the one who doubts himself cannot achieve anything: he fatally does everything in order to fail.

It is extremely important that parents and mentors set an example for their children. The child is highly susceptible to suggestion. He does everything that he sees others do. Let parents therefore refrain from setting bad examples.

As soon as the child learns to speak, make him say in the morning and evening twenty times: “Every day I am getting better and better in all respects.” This formula also promotes excellent physical and mental health in children.

The following suggestion can be extremely successful in eliminating noticed shortcomings in children and inducing desirable qualities in them:

Every night, as soon as the child falls asleep, go to his bed as quietly as possible so as not to wake him up, stand at a distance of about a meter next to him and fifteen, twenty times say in a quiet voice (whisper) what you would like to evoke in him.

“Finally, I consider it highly desirable that mentors give their students the following suggestion every morning. Having made them close their eyes, you should tell them: “Children, I know that you will always behave well, be courteous to everyone and obey your parents and teachers. When they tell you to do something or make a remark, you will immediately carry it out and it will not be at all difficult for you. Sometimes it seems to you that they are reprimanding you just to make you feel unpleasant. Now you understand well that this is being done only in your own interests, and therefore you will always feel only a feeling of gratitude to those who turn to you with this.

You will love any work, whatever it may be. And since now your work is reduced to studies, you will treat with love all the subjects that you study, especially those that you have not liked until now. When you come to school and listen to the teacher, you will focus all your attention, entirely on what he will say, and you will not think at all about the pranks or stupid antics of your comrades and, of course, you will not do them yourself.

And since you have the abilities, you will easily understand and assimilate what the teacher will tell you: everything that you learn will be arranged in order on the shelves of your memory and will always be there at your disposal: as needed, you can always use one or the other from there.

When you are studying alone at home or preparing your homework, treat your studies the same way with all your attention and you will always have the highest grades.”

1

Following the wishes of the author, we use here and in further presentation the term “unconscious” (inconscient), although in the scientific literature another corresponding term is much more common: “subconscient”, “subconscious” and etc. (Translator's note).

2

How many different phobias, of the most varied types and properties, sometimes almost completely invisible, develop in this way in large sections of the population! How much unnecessary suffering we all, without exception, create for ourselves! And at the same time, everywhere, in all areas of life - and all only because right now, “immediately” we do not replace “malicious unconscious self-hypnosis” with “good and conscious self-hypnosis” capable of eliminating our objectively unreasonable suffering.

Conscious self-hypnosis as a path to self-mastery

Neither the creator of the method himself, nor his numerous followers, who number quite a few prominent and famous doctors in their ranks, never undermined reverence for scientific medicine, did not oppose the method of self-hypnosis to it, and did not “lead” the patient away from the doctor.

Working tirelessly, day after day, year after year, he has given - and continues to give - through tens of thousands of examples - proof of the high practical the value of the new method.
