What are shadows made of? Creating an eyeshadow palette at home. Minerals and pigments

Shadow theater for children usually means not only a theater with puppets, but also images of animal shadows using hands. Parents can amaze their child with animated pictures on the simplest wall.

History of shadow theater

Shadow theater is an art that originated many centuries ago. The richest and most famous were fond of it, because the puppets were made by hand from thin, well-dressed camel skin. Openwork dolls, animals and birds, painted by masters in all the colors of the rainbow, were expensive.

It was only in the 17th century that the French realized that the mystery of shadow theater, depicting unprecedented figures with their own hands, especially captivated children, so this art spread in just a couple of years in the form of a real role-playing game.

DIY animal shadows

Organizing a shadow theater at home couldn't be easier! There is nothing complicated about animal shadows; most often, just two hands are enough to see a bunny, dog or bird.

So, how to make eyeshadow with your own hands?

  1. You will need a light wall or any large object, hung with a white sheet;
  2. Sunlight or light from a bright lamp should shine directly on the wall, not from the side;
  3. Approach the wall in such a way that your own shadow does not fall directly on the wall;
  4. Fold your hands as shown in any of the pictures.

You can also bring animal shadows to life with your own hands! Move your fingers and your bunny will fold his ears and the bird will fly. Teach your child to draw shadows of animals; this will develop the baby’s motor skills and spatial thinking.

In this article you will learn how to make eyeshadow with your own hands, what components are used and where you can buy them.

The role of shadows in creating makeup

Some women do not consider it necessary to include shadows in their cosmetic bag, while others, on the contrary, cannot imagine their image without colored powder or cream-like products applied to their eyelids, which:
  • They can visually reduce the distance between wide-set eyes or, on the contrary, increase them in the case of close-set eyes.
  • They can make the eyes visually elongated or, on the contrary, enlarge them a little if they are not naturally large.
  • They have the opportunity to emphasize makeup, add some zest to it, and add depth to the look.
  • Capable of highlighting the beauty of the color of the iris.
On sale you can find shadows of the following variations:
  1. Dry eye shadow. They can be presented in the form of matte, compact products that are well suited for women who do not yet have experience in the correct and appropriate application of shadows, such shadows can be considered classics in the field of cosmetology. There are also shimmering versions of compact shadows, which are most suitable for young girls, since the content of shimmering elements in the composition allows you not to mask, but rather to emphasize small wrinkles around the eyes. Loose translucent powder used as eyeshadow allows you to only slightly draw attention to the eyes; if you want to apply a product with spectacular iridescent particles on your eyelids, you may want to choose a loose powder rich in appropriate pigments.
  2. Liquid eye shadow. If you are often in a hurry to get to work or school, and you don’t want to spend a little more time on creating good makeup, perhaps creamy shadows in a special jar will suit you. In this case, you can safely use your fingers instead of an applicator. Also, such shadows have advantages over other means and consist in the fact that they fit better. Liquid shadows in a tube are an excellent solution for dry skin; they contain a considerable amount of moisturizing and nourishing components. If you don't want to apply the product with your fingers, you can buy eyeshadow with an applicator or eyeshadow stick.

What are shadows made of?

If you want to make shadows with your own hands, first you should decide on
the result of their creation, because shadows can be dry and liquid. The composition of the product depends on this choice.

The composition of dry eye shadows is often formed by zinc and magnesium stearates, talc, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and clay. In some products, instead of talc, which, according to some cosmetologists, clogs the skin and obliges women to wash off makeup every day, mica is added to the formulation. Depending on the desired effect, the shadows may contain boron nitride, allantoin, rice powder, mica, silk powder, etc.

Another composition is noted for shadow pencils, the functions of the neck of which are not only to introduce your own adjustments to the makeup, but also to maintain shape, which means that the composition of such products should be based on components that are more related to each other, but not too much. In order not to bother with recipes, manufacturers decided to use similar components and similar dosages, which are used in the manufacture of lipsticks. Eyeshadow sticks usually contain a mixture of various waxes and oils, paraffin, stearic acid, propylene carbonate, crosspolymer, lanolin, etc.

Creamy themes are made on the basis of vegetable oils, including peach kernels, olive, and castor. Some liquid options contain alcohol.

Regardless of the type of shadows, they are all marked by the presence of their own colors due to the content of pigments, which can be divided into two groups: mineral components and organic compounds. There is no consensus on the safety of these pigments; some argue that minerals are safer, others vote for organic compounds.

Beeswax- the basis of many cosmetic ingredients, has good softening, nourishing properties, promotes the healing of skin damage, and also protects the skin from external irritants, does not allow moisture to evaporate, forming a thin film. The more wax in the recipe, the harder the product will be.

Titanium dioxide And zinc oxide are natural sunscreen filters. Zinc oxide is more transparent than titanium dioxide; it can also dry out the skin, so it is not recommended in large quantities for dry skin types; it has good anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. Titanium dioxide is often used as a white pigment, it creates structure in the product and locks moisture into the skin.

Boron nitride- An excellent addition to mineral cosmetics to create an internal illumination effect. This component guarantees glide and increases the adhesion of the product to the skin.

The pigments are iron oxide(red, yellow, brown, black), and ultramarine, chromium oxide, carbons, etc. Mineral pigments are the ideal solution for oily skin with enlarged pores.

Mother of pearl mickeys- ordinary mica, colored with mineral pigments of different colors. Each mikka is marked by its particle size, small mikkas provide a pearlescent effect with a smooth shine, medium mikkas - satin, large particles help in creating decorative cosmetics with a sparkling result.

Carrageenan- stabilizer, thickener with a neutral odor and taste, easy to use, helps in creating stable emulsions. The component has softening and soothing properties, prevents moisture from evaporating, and reduces irritation.

Pour the resulting bulk mixture into a jar, add alcohol drop by drop and stir with a spoon, as a result of which the mixture will resemble a thick paste. Place a napkin on top and press the shadows using a coin. After some time, the ethyl alcohol will evaporate.

Foundation + moisturizer = BB cream

Even professional makeup artists use this technique! You can make the perfect BB cream yourself by mixing a thick foundation with a moisturizer that you are used to using and consider ideal for yourself. This way you will achieve a light and not too dense coverage, and your skin will receive the necessary hydration.

Lipstick + tone = liquid blush

We are often told to apply lipstick straight from the stick to our cheekbones to achieve perfect harmony between the colors of our lips and cheeks. But there is a better option: mix a little lipstick (you can carefully cut a piece straight from the stick with a knife) with foundation. Apply with a brush to your cheekbones: this liquid blush not only looks very natural, but also lasts all day - much better than its powder counterparts.

Popular

Eyeshadow + lip balm = tint

Eyeshadow in the right shades can be useful to you to create a tint or lipstick - and no one else will have it! How to make cosmetics at home? Mix pink, raspberry, lilac and even golden shadows with lip balm, adjust the intensity of the shade depending on the number of shadows - and your signature tint is ready. The main thing is to choose a good moisturizing balm, because shadows still slightly dry out your lips. If you need a more glossy finish, then instead of balm you can safely use transparent lip gloss!

Brown eye shadow + lip balm = eyebrow tint

It's no secret that it's very convenient to tint eyebrows using brown matte shadows, but their crumbly texture does not provide adequate durability. There is a way out - and it’s very simple! Add just a little lip balm to the shadows. It will provide the necessary oily base that will allow the shadows to last longer. Give me perfect eyebrows!

Mascara + shimmer = glitter mascara

There are many brands of mascara with glitter, but is there any point in buying such a product if it is only useful for parties? It’s easier to do it yourself - you probably have shimmer or golden eyeshadow, pour it into old mascara and mix it right in the tube. If the mascara has already thickened, add a couple of drops of eyelid makeup remover lotion: they usually have an oil base, which will not change the composition of the mascara. Professional cosmetics at home is ready!

Clear polish + eye shadow = glitter polish

You can quickly create a new nail polish without buying anything using clear polish and glitter eye shadow. It is better to mix on a separate surface, for example, in a plastic container - this will make it easier for you to regulate the intensity and consistency of your homemade varnish. Stir well until the mixture becomes homogeneous and paint your nails as usual.

DIY making

Famous manufacturers of decorative cosmetics are increasingly introducing mineral components into eye shadow, as the quality of the product with such a component increases several times. Long-lasting, bright, with many colors and shades, such shadows are becoming more and more popular. The price of good quality eye shadow is quite high, so many craftswomen began to try to create mineral and creamy shadows at home with minimal expense of money and time. And our article and a sufficient number of videos on the global network speak about how to make eye shadow.

Creamy long-lasting shadows

If one day you accidentally dropped and broke a palette with your compact shadows, or, upon coming home, you discovered that the eyeshadow you bought did not suit you at all, and you were simply tired and bored with the old options, then you can make it yourself in a minimum amount of time at home long-lasting cream shadows using old ones as a base.

You will need glycerin and medical ethyl alcohol, which are sold at any pharmacy, as well as empty and washed inserts from old blush or eye shadow, a mixing container and a toothpick. There's just a little bit left to do:

  1. Combine several required colors
  2. Add a drop of glycerin and one or two drops of alcohol to the dry mixture
  3. Mix all components thoroughly until a homogeneous mass is obtained.

If you're not quite happy with the resulting color, add some old stock light or dark eyeshadow and mix again. Lightly tap the eyeshadow container to release any excess air bubbles and wait one day for the alcohol to evaporate. All! New bright and long-lasting eye shadows are ready!

Minerals and pigments

Long-lasting, hypoallergenic and rich mineral eyeshadow, made with your own hands - every day more and more videos on this topic appear on the Internet. The main components for mineral shadows made at home are sericite and pigment in a ratio of 1 to 1. If you want to end up with pressed eye shadow, then you need to take 50% sericite, 45% pigment and add 5% additive (magnesium stearate , magnesium myristate or colored sericites).

It is additives of this type that ensure the durability of the made product on the eyes and high-quality application. Sericite (another name is mica) is a natural mineral additive that is used specifically for the production of cosmetics on its own and serves as an excellent alternative to talc. Mika, along with pigments, is sold in stores that specialize in soap making, hand-made products and creating DIY cosmetics.

Cooking steps

  • Before starting the process, prepare a container for the shadows and spoons or spatulas with which you need to scoop up the ingredients. Both the container and spoons need to be treated with alcohol for disinfection.
  • Take one part (for example, 0.5 tsp) of sericite and the selected additive on the tip of a spoon. Now you need to create the color - the main thing here is not to overdo it.
  • Review the principles of color in advance: study which shades need to be mixed in order to get the one you need.
  • Now mix everything thoroughly and try applying a little dry eyeshadow on the brush - if you are happy with the color, move on to the next step.

  • Prepare a small container to hold your mineral eye shadow. This could be a container from an old palette or a specially purchased box.
  • Disinfect the container, pour some dry eye shadow you prepared into it and add a few drops of ethyl medical alcohol.
  • Mix everything quickly and thoroughly. The volume of the mass will decrease and now you need to add the dry mixture and alcohol again. Repeat this until the dry base is gone.

If suddenly you overdo it with alcohol and the eye shadow prepared at home becomes too liquid, add more sericite and mix again. Leave the container open for five to six hours to allow the alcohol to completely evaporate. After the time has passed, close the container with a lid and feel free to use your new, high-quality and long-lasting mineral eyeshadow!

Do-it-yourself mineral-based eye shadows have a long shelf life, do not cause allergies, apply well and retain color and durability throughout the day. In addition, you can create your own unique shade and know what exactly is included in your cosmetic product!
